About this listen
Sleater-Kinney’s co-leaders Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein dig into 25 years of shared history-making music and making noise. Listen to this bold duo speak openly about the places, people, and movements that have shaped their career as well as the evolution of their creative and personal relationship. The bandmates and friends trace how their ambitions and their relationship have continued to inform each other and how they’ve navigated through the ups and downs for the sake of the band and their art. They move seamlessly through the different chapters of the band, sharing peeks behind the curtain, like the story behind their beloved autobiographical song “One More Hour”, which they wrote about their own experience breaking up as a romantic couple and finding their way back to each other as friends and bandmates.
They dive into their ongoing journey from their beginnings out of the Riot Grrrl scene in Olympia, Washington, to Carrie’s triumph with the TV show Portlandia, and on to their continued efforts to challenge each other and meet the political moment. It’s a deeply personal and exciting exploration of themes that have followed them throughout their career, like anxiety, activism, feminism, LGBTQ identity, motherhood, friendship, creativity, and change - all illustrated by evocative new recordings that’ll make you turn up the volume.
This entry to the Words + Music series features eight exclusive new versions of songs spanning the band’s 10-album discography (so far), from “One More Hour” and “One Beat” to “Path of Wellness”, and “Worry With You” from their 2021 album Path of Wellness.

But while his songs and music have been endlessly discussed and analyzed, Jeff has rarely talked so directly about himself, his life, and his artistic process.

"Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned"...So say the publishers about this audiobook I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii, and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold.

No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Gold Dust Woman gives "the gold standard of rock biographers" (the Boston Globe) his ideal topic: Nicks' work and life are equally sexy and interesting, and Davis delves deeply into each, unearthing fresh details from new, intimate interviews and interpreting them to present a rich new portrait of the star. Just as Nicks (and Lindsay Buckingham) gave Fleetwood Mac the "shot of adrenaline" they needed to become real rock stars - according to Christine McVie - Gold Dust Woman is vibrant with stories and with a life lived large and hard.

About Sleater-Kinney
Featured Article: Why Riot Grrrl Still Matters
In the early 1990s in the hazy fog of the Pacific Northwest, a movement was brewing. A gathering of women convened in Olympia, the capital of Washington State, to discuss the pitfalls that plagued their local punk scene—an environment rocked by sexism that was, at best, uncomfortable and, at worst, openly hostile to fans and artists who didn't mirror lineups dominated by straight white men. Whether Bikini Kill holds a prime spot on your playlist or you've yet to hear the drumbeat born from a woman oppressed, these listens offer a fully-fledged history of the riot grrrl revolution.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Riot Grrrl to Path To Wellness
Fans of Sleater-Kinney will love this short audiobook in which Carrie and Corin cover their highlights and lowlights of the 25 years of making music together, from the Riot Grrrl scene all the way to the creating and recording of their newly released album, Path to Wellness during Covid. Their personalities and strong bond to each other really come out in One More Hour.
In addition to the interesting band-related content, they chat about a number of other personal issues in each of their lives, including what they did during the band's ten-year hiatus. Among other things, Corin raised two children and Carrie created the great TV show Portlandia with Fred Armisen. They never missed a beat after reuniting - creating three critically acclaimed albums, and putting on great loud, high energy, live shows. I had the opportunity to see them absolutely rock a sold out Palace Theater in St. Paul in 2019. Their new album is fantastic and is in heavy rotation in my car and ear pods.
Also recommended for Sleater-Kinney fans is Carrie's memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. One More Hour is a great compliment to it. Oh, and One More Hour features a Sleater-Kinney song between each chapter, including two from the new album. Fantastic!
