About this listen

A struggling writer is forced to walk down the aisle at her best friend’s wedding with the man who gave her book a very public one-star rating in this fresh romantic comedy from Laura Hankin.

Natalie and Rob couldn’t have less in common. Nat’s a messy artist, and Rob’s a rigid academic. The only thing they share is their devotion to their respective best friends—who just got engaged. Still, unexpected chemistry has Natalie cautiously optimistic about being maid of honor to Rob’s best man.

Until, minutes before the ceremony, Nat learns that Rob wrote a one-star review of her new novel, which has them both reeling: Nat from imposter syndrome, and Rob over the reason he needed to write it.

When the reception ends, these two opposites hope they’ll never meet again. But, as they slip from their twenties into their thirties, they’re forced together whenever their fast-track best friends celebrate another milestone. Through housewarmings and christenings, life-changing triumphs and failures, Natalie and Rob grapple with their own choices—and how your harshest critic can become your perfectly imperfect match.

After all, even the truest love stories sometimes need a bit of rewriting.

Critic reviews

“One-Star Romance will go down in history as the most ironically named novel ever. I give five giant stars to this funny, twisty and emotionally authentic story of true love and long friendship. I absolutely adored it.”—Annabel Monaghan, bestselling author of Same Time Next Summer

“Laura Hankin takes a nightmare premise for any writer—the dreaded one-star review—and with her signature charm and humor weaves it into a perfect dream.”—Steven Rowley, New York Times bestselling author of The Celebrants

“ALL OF THE STARS! Is it mean to take so much pleasure in two characters bumbling their way through life? If so, call me a monster because I fell HARD for Natalie and Rob. These two imperfect humans trying (and often failing) to figure out this whole adulting thing felt so real and relatable. Flat-out fun, laugh out loud funny, and voicey as hell, this is the book I will be shoving into friends’ hands this summer and demanding they fall in love with these characters, too!”Becca Freeman, author of The Christmas Orphans Club

“Hankin performs a magic trick with this book, turning the most unlikeable (and relatable) of characters into flawed protagonists worth rooting for. Natalie and Rob are the definition of “right person, wrong time,” and because the story spans multiple years, we get the pleasure of seeing them make mistakes, grow up and grow together. It’s real, refreshing and romantic.”
The Washington Post

Loved the build up!

This book was so good- it warmed my heart and broke it multiple times throughout. Main characters were excellent, but the author really made me fall in love with Angus.

Hints of Jane Austen perhaps?

I'll give the story 3 1/2 stars. The main characters had a little too much pride and prejudice to me for much ofvthe book. The author did a great job narrating.

Me encantó

Me gustó. Pero construyo tanto la anticipación para que los personajes principales terminaran juntos que apenas se juntaron me pareció que perdió un poco el chiste. Hasta lo sentí anti climático! Igual lo disfruté bastante

I feel mis-lead!! (In a good way)

So I picked 1 Star because I had just finished some back to back post-apocalyptic and drama reads. It looked light hearted and comedic.
The first half was funny/sarcastic and pretty realistic in the situations put forward. What I did not expect was to be in actual tears in the second half as one of our leading ladies faced a future unclear.
As I often forget to bring my 'filter' with me, I've often not done myself any favors, as does Nat. But, having gone through treatments for Breast Cancer when my older daughter was only 7 and currently going through End Stage Renal Failure while my younger one is just 20; having a lifelong friend with whom there's been a divide these past few years and just recently begun to reconcile and finally, having written my "E-mails to be sent after my death" I feel a shift of kinship toward Gabby.
I love the men in these leading ladies' lives - how they support those they love and won't completely give up on them.
Definitely a good read/listen!!!

So many unexpected tears

Thoroughly enjoyed the book but was unprepared for the cancer story arc. My best friend just went through something similar and apparently, there are a lot of things that I haven’t processed yet. I laughed, I cried, and I will recommend this book to anyone who has a best friend they love more than they’ve loved anything else.

This should not be under romance

This book was okay but the main focus of the book isn’t the love story but the friendship between Nat and Gabby. If your looking for that, go ahead.

Lovely

I really enjoyed this book! Although, it has a little more of a general fiction feel to it rather than a full romance, but it was still beautiful! All in all: I loved it!

A couple trigger warnings: Greif, cancer, and dementia are some topics that are touched.
