About this listen

In this splendidly bittersweet romantic comedy, enemies forced together by a mutual loss are led on a cross-country journey toward a second chance.

Maddie Sanderson would be proud to honor her older brother’s dying wish, that she scatters his ashes over eight destinations that the adventurous 29-year-old never got to visit before he died from cancer. But in his will, Josh assigned her an impossible partner to help complete the mission—Dominic Perry. Seriously, if Maddie weren’t already at her brother's funeral, she would have killed him for this.

Sure, Dom was Josh’s life-long best friend. He’s also the infuriating man who broke Maddie’s heart back when she was naïve enough to give it to him. But since Dom insists on following the rules and Josh didn’t leave much room for Maddie to argue the matter, they embark together on a series of farewell trips that span thousands of miles, exploring new places and revisiting their complicated history along the way.

After a snowstorm leads to a shared bed, Maddie starts to wonder if her brother might be matchmaking from the grave. But when grief also reopens old wounds between them, Maddie will need more than Josh’s ghostly guidance to trust Dom again.

An okay read

I wanted to love this but there were characters I found incredibly frustrating. There were touching moments but I think I'm outside the intended demographic overall. Great narration kept me listening to the end.

Such a cute book ! A good read !!

This is really cute, the story flows well and the spice is good. The plot is very well thawed out and towards the end it just catches you in the fields. I would definitely recommend this book.

Great premise, insufferable at times

Liked this one for the most part. The main character Maddie was mostly entertaining but insufferable at times, as was Dom. The random smut in the middle of the book kind of threw me off. I read books with steamy elements all the time but got this one, it just didn’t fit or add to the story, and it could have been left out. The narrator was good for the most part, but her voice did get a little grating at times, especially when portraying Dom. Overall it was a great premise with decent execution by the narrator.

Sweet and poignant

Everyone leaves Maddie Sanderson - her father, her "influencer" mother, and now her beloved brother Josh. Well, Josh had no choice as he went and died on her. The nerve. Not only did he die, but he left Maddie with a mission - to scatter his ashes in places he never got to go in his adventures. She would have been proud and touched if he hadn't added a "companion" for these trips: his best friend, Dominic, another name on the list of people who left Maddie. He broke her heart, she wants nothing to do with him (she moved across the country to achieve that), but he's the executor of Josh's will and he will follow the rules and go with her. He also has the letters Josh left them both, and she really has no choice. They embark on 8 trips through the course of two years and these trips will make them uncomfortable at first, then they become a necessity and finally they realize that Josh had ulterior motives...
If you are going through grief, this book might hit you hard. As someone who lost a deeply beloved brother, I could empathize with Maddie from the start.
I am not going to say I was surprised by Josh's "plans" (and I saw the surprise at the end coming from a mile away) but I really liked going with Maddie and Dominic in their journey to scatter Josh's ashes while falling in love.
There is a lot of banter, Maddie and Josh certainly found their family in Dominic's (I loved the relationship Maddie had with Dom's twin brothers) and you you will laugh and get teary eyed too. A lovely, poignant and still funny ride.
PS: If you love audiobooks, Karissa Vacker is her awesome self in this solo narration!

Definitely a DNF for me

I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. Maddie (the main character) was so annoying and grating, like fingers on a chalk board. Nothing likable about her. Maybe I will come back to it and start in the middle of the book and see if she gets better.
