Publisher's summary

The president's son is dying. Terrorists claim to have the only cure.

When a private plane whisks CDC epidemiologist Madeline Hamilton to Washington, DC, for an urgent medical symposium, she knows something significant is underway - but she doesn’t expect to face the most disturbing medical mystery of her career. A debilitating neurological toxin has stricken the children of several political families, and one of them is the son of US President Anna Moreland.

With the lives of children on the line, Madeline assembles a team of medical experts. The investigation takes a horrifying turn when she starts receiving communications from the terrorists, who want to engage in a deadly political game.

Desperate to find the perpetrators and a cure, the White House recruits FBI anti-terror specialist Quinn Traynor to run a parallel investigation. As the teenagers start dying and the answers seem no closer, Madeline and Quinn fight to prevail before President Moreland is forced to make an impossible choice: give in to the terrorists’ demands, or let her only child succumb to an agonizing death.

This is the second book in the phenomenal FBI and CDC Thriller series by USA Today best-selling author Jenifer Ruff. It can be listened to as a stand-alone.

Terrorism, cartels, politics, and romance!

I somehow missed the first book in this series (Only Wrong Once) and while I am sure it would have provided more of a foundation for the main characters and their relationship to each other, I never felt I was missing anything integral to this story. It can absolutely be read as a standalone (having said that, I have already gone back and purchased the first one because the writing and the characters are so good).

This book has something for everyone. It is a well-written and compelling page-turner of a novel that features strong, intelligent female characters who are highly accomplished and very relatable. Also featured are some very convincing and rather loathsome villains, each with their own agendas, who are working together to perpetrate a heinous act of terrorism against the United States. The story is told from the perspective of a CDC epidemiologist, Madeline Hamilton and an FBI counterterrorism agent (and Madeline’s love interest), Quinn Traynor. Both have been called in to combat different aspects of this threat against their country. A neurotoxin has been deployed against a select group of young people (all of whom have wealthy and/or politically prominent parents) and a nerve-racking, tension-filled race is on to find out who is responsible for this toxin and how to combat its effects before the young lives are lost. The plot is intriguing and plausible, the characters are well-developed and believable, and the suspense is unremitting. There is no gratuitous or graphic violence, no unsavory language, and the romance between Madeline and Quinn is devoid of explicit scenes. I applaud the professional presentation of this book – it is well-edited with no typos or grammatical errors to detract from the flow of the narrative. I chose to listen to the audiobook version as I read along with the e-book version and I must comment on the superlative job done by the narrator, Stephanie Dillard. I felt she employed every technique possible (variances in pitch, cadence, tone, and accents) to bring this story and its characters to life for the listener. Without reservation, I recommend this book and audiobook to all.

While I did purchase a copy of this book, I was provided with a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this honest and unbiased review.

Mixed review....

Ok, so the writing is great, the characters are fantastic, and the story was tightly woven. It definitely drew you to the end. The only draw backs were the science and FBI/CDC responses that strained credulity. If you are looking for something with realism, this isn't for you. If you can suspend disbelief, this is a fun story, and you won't be disappointed.

Great medical/terrorist thriller

Fast paced and with lots of tension.
I am not normally a fan of medical thrillers but this one caught my attention and kept me turning pages.
I can highly recommend this audiobook to any one who likes a well written thriller.

Very predictable

Not much to hold one’s interest. The story line was interesting, yet not much suspense. The characters would have benefited from more depth.

Great Story - Voice was just OK.

I liked the storyline! Romance and suspense! But the voice actor was not good. poor and incorrect placement of inflection. The way she talked didn’t match how a normal person would talk. I won’t listen to a book with her voice again.

Like 2020 but with Hope

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

While there is always hope, it takes time to find cures or vaccines or medications that can help the sick. This book timespan happens within a about a month and everything moves quickly. But it’s at just the right pace for even the reader to pick up and start to figure things out. Very well written and performed. I couldn’t stop listening.

CDC and FBI to the rescue!

This was a well-written and entertaining book. A mysterious illness has struck a group of soccer players after a trip to Brazil. Is the disease attacking their nervous systems a result of this trip? Or, there something more sinister at work. Considering that these young people attend an exclusive school and happen to be the sons and daughters of Senators, businessmen and the POTUS, it could even be terrorists!

The CDC and FBI are called upon to solve the mystery, find a cure and discover who is behind this heinous illness before one or more of these kids succumbs. If this is a terrorist attack, it could mean the end of the President's term in office or worse. Add in the possibility that a drug cartel might be involved and a person close to the President being addicted to oxycodone and you have a true thriller.

The story moved at a fast pace and was engaging from start to finish. The author does a good job with keeping the reader's interest with all of the twists and turns. There is also plenty of action and a little romance to add to the mix. The narrator does a good job with the pacing and the voices she uses for the various characters.

I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.

Predictable

I like a good "epidemic" story, but it just laks a twist. Everything is just so linear and predictable. It is mysterious at times, but probably the last third of the book, we all know what is going to happen at end. Missing a big twist!
