Editorial reviews

The protagonist of Others literally begins his journey in hell as a tormented soul until two angels make him a proposition for a chance at redemption through a mission on the surface. Reborn as a private investigator in England with no memory of his past life, he is sent on an investigation that takes him to a nursing home and unlocks mysterious secrets of his personal and the demons of Others. Kris Dyer performs the audiobook with a gripping and macabre style that puts you into the detective's plight. Any fan of James Herbert's will delight at this chilling and inventive tale that keeps your blood pumping until the very end.

Critic reviews

"Herbert was by no means literary, but his work had a raw urgency. His best novels, The Rats and The Fog, had the effect of Mike Tyson in his championship days: no finesse, all crude power. Those books were best sellers because many readers (including me) were too horrified to put them down.” (Stephen King)
"There are few things I would like to do less than lie under a cloudy night sky while someone read aloud the more vivid passages of Moon. In the thriller genre, do recommendations come any higher?" (Andrew Postman, The New York Times Book Review)
"Herbert goes out in a blaze of glory" ( Daily Mail)

Depravety.

Upon his death a movie star handsome man jumps at the chance when offered another life to redeem himself from living such a selfish and vain life. He will have no memory of his current life and will return horribly disfigured.

As the story unravels the purpose behind his deformities become relevant and he must do whatever he can to stop the gruesom horror that he uncovers.

A good thriller with a original story.

Thoughtful and twisted tale.

I first read "Others" around 20 years ago. The story stayed with me for years and seeing it on Audible I decided to revisit it. Full disclosure: I'm partial to the reincarnation concept in real life and the authors end note made me wonder if he was also although you can't really tell one way or the other just from the short note.

As for the story it's creepy and even grotesque in places as physical deformities are described in detail. The bleak yet casual cruelty we do to each other as a species and yet it's also about acceptance and the human connection that we all share. The performance on Audible of the reader is very well done. He didn't have any overly dramatic or lackadaisical attitude that took away from the story. He kept me engaged in the tale the whole way through.

not for me

What would have made Others better?

less self-pity

What was most disappointing about James Herbert’s story?

I really did not like the way he tied sins to being born with handicaps

Would you be willing to try another one of Kris Dyer’s performances?

no

What character would you cut from Others?

the main one
