About this listen

1943, England: On a foggy night during the blackout, 25-year-old May Robinson watches in horror as her mother, Ivy, is tragically killed. Heartbroken, May is not sure she has the strength to harbour the secret she has kept for so many years – a secret that her mother devoted her life to hiding, and that would tear their broken family even further apart. Vowing to make her mother proud, May trains to be a nurse at the local hospital, against a backdrop of wailing air-raid sirens and the eternal drone of enemy planes. Tending to wounded, ashen-faced soldiers and fighting to save lives, May encounters Richard Bentley, who works at the hospital. But why isn’t he fighting in the war like thousands of other brave young men? In the darkest of days, amongst death and despair, May and Richard are beacons of hope for one another. But in a perilous time of such uncertainty, and as each longs to escape their past, how well do they really know each other? And when the shocking truth of May’s secret comes to light, can their love survive the impossible?©2019 Shirley Dickson (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Fiction Literary Fiction Sagas Heartfelt Young Adult

Critic reviews

'It was heartbreaking … I smiled through these happy times with them but also shed tears … I could not put it down … Will undoubtedly pull at your heart-strings. Just make sure you have a box of tissues ready!’ (Stardust Reviews)

Another wonderful story

I found Shirley Dickson a while ago and I have I think read all of her books to date. Actually, I listen to them because I have very poor vision and I love the English accent. I hope she keeps on writing more and more books!

The life trials that May had to face

A true to life story that has you feeling for the heroine’s challenges and how she copes with what is thrown at her.

Fantastic novel by a great writer!

The author has written a brilliant novel with plenty of intrigue and suspense! The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life!

Good listen

I enjoyed the story as I like that era. The narration could have been better in my opinion as the English accent can be very beautiful. Some voices were shrill and I did not care for them.

Another wonderful story by Shirley Dickson!

As soon as I start a new book of Shirley’s I enjoy it so I can’t stop listening. Of course then I then don’t want it to end and want more. Now I look forward to her next book.
