About this listen

Plymouth, 1941. As sirens blare all around, the Shawbrook family takes refuge in a packed shelter. Bombs have already begun to fall through the night sky when they realize their infant son, Freddie, has been forgotten in the rush, left to sleep in his crib. Terrified, Vera, his young mother, races to find him and bring him to safety.

The next morning, air-raid warden David Shawbrook returns from his watch to find the shelter pulverized, and his family seemingly all dead. Dirty footprints inside their home betray the looters who have rifled through the house.

Meanwhile, Maggie waits alone for her husband. Since the death of her infant son, she passes her days at home with neither joy nor aim. But not this morning. For this morning her husband has brought home a child, found abandoned in the aftermath of the terrible raid - a child she is sure is the one she held in her arms so many months before.

Loathsome people, especially the baby’s mum. Baby would have been better off with Maggie. Mue was boring and she was supposed to be the main character.

All of the major characters were awful people.

This is the 3rd book by this author that I have listened to in recent weeks. I really enjoy her books but find the endings quite anti-climactic. Guess she has to end them somehow. I highly doubt recommend this author and the narrators aren’t bad either.

Captivating story

This story holds your attention and and is not too complex to just relax and enjoy.

Cute story, Easy Listening

Warm, loving WW2 novel with enough intrigue to hold the reader's attention.
Some historical information woven in for authenticity, and which for me compounded my interest. Yes I recommend this book.

DELIGHTFUL

This is only my second book from this author and I can’t get enough. The stories are interesting, narrated well, and never quite what you will think of to be. I feel as if I am watching a movie the characters and their actions and places are described so well. Not overly detailed but enough to get a nice vivid picture in the brain. Narrator was fabulous as well.

What an adventure!

The story line keeps you guessing as to how the whole stolen baby situation will play out. I loved it!

Another great story by this author!

I loved this story, told beautifully so you could connect to all the characters, sadly even the villain of the story. So much history of war times covered, the emotional rollercoaster of love, family, teen pregnancy, loss and the love and joy of being reunited through out the journey. the voice of the narrator was so relaxing, and reminded me of Trixie on “call the midwife” a lovely, soothing voice leaving you wanting to keep listening.

Emotional story of family, and survival.

This was a rather interesting plot that was marred by an improbable set of circumstances.
It was very hard to like the three main women characters and the narration was pretty bad.
Shrill at times and annoying. I only finished it because I liked several of the authors other
books. I will not listen to this narrator again she had a terrible accent.

Interesting Premise but unbelievable delivery

The story wasn’t bad although a bit repetitive. The voices for two of the very main characters were a bit much at times. Like I had to stop listening for a while. The narration can certainly make or break a book for me. Use your credit on this author’s book The Throwaway Children. It did not disappoint!

Whiny Main Characters!
