About this listen

1929: Four-year-old Etty and eight-year-old Dorothy are abandoned at Blakely Hall orphanage by their mother, never to see her again. With no other family to speak of, the sisters worship their beloved mam – and they are confused and heartbroken to be deserted by her when they need her the most. 1940: Etty and Dorothy are finally released from the confines of Blakely Hall – but their freedom comes when the country is in the grip of World War Two and its terrors. Amidst a devastating backdrop of screaming air-raid sirens and cold nights huddled in shelters, the sisters are desperate to put their broken childhoods behind them. But trouble lies ahead. Dorothy must bid goodbye to her beloved husband when he’s sent to war and Etty must nurse a broken heart as she falls in love with the one man she can never be with. Etty and Dorothy survived the orphanage with the help of one another and neither sister can forget the awful betrayal of their mother, which has haunted them their whole lives. But when a shocking secret about their painful childhood comes to light, will the sisters ever be the same again?©2019 Shirley Dickson (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Genre Fiction Literary Fiction Sagas Heartfelt

I have read several of Shirley Dickson‘s books, and I like this one equally as well as the rest. It had me in tears and it also brought great joy. It seems well researched and it is well written, and well narrated.- don’t skip this one!

I enjoyed every minute of this lovely book. It moved along at just the right pace, unfolding the hopes, dreams and challenges of each character in a way that made you feel as though, by the end, they had become companions. The sisters, Ettie and Dorothy and their dedication and unconditional love for each other was heartwarming and inspiring. If only more of us behaved this way towards one another today. For a first novel, the author did an amazing job. I think anyone would find this book to be enjoyable.

A Heartwarming Story of Sisterhood, Love and Strug

This is the second book of Shirley Dickson’s that I have read. I was happy that this book was just as enjoyable
as The Outcast Girls. The characters came to life and the narrator was superb. I intend to read all her books, and I
can’t wait for her next book! Shirley is definitely going to be my next posting on my Facebook page! Keep on writing Shirley, we’re all waiting!

P.S. Don’t ever have anyone but Anne narrate your books!
