About this listen

John Harmon, in exile for many years, discovers that by a curious quirk in his father’s will he must marry Bella Wilfer, a girl he has never met, in order to claim his inheritance. Mistakenly thought to have drowned, on his return he gains employment with the kindly Mr Boffin under the assumed name of John Rokesmith and falls in love with the flighty and mercenary Bella, who scornfully rejects him as a mere impoverished secretary. But Boffin and his wife contrive a plan to help John and show Bella the error of her ways.

As much as I enjoyed the characters I felt there were too many to keep up with (im a bit slower than most). I was a third of a way through the story before I knew who most of them were. This was my reason for 4 stars and not five but again most listeners probably could give this book a five for what it was and without comparing. After knowing the story was coming to an end shortly I began to miss some of the characters like Bella and Lizzy of course.

I enjoyed the characters but and when I could keep up I enjoyed the detailed history’s of each of them as they were introduced

This was a great book to listen to! I was a little disappointed with the ending, but you'll have to listen to see what you think... Remember to be patient at the beginning of any Dickens novel.

Love Dickens!

Charles Dickens was such a wordsmith. I soon discovered that I had to listen attentively to catch the subtle jokes and jabs that flew past with no fan fare. Thoroughly enjoyable. I was sorry to come to the end.

Very Enjoyable

The narrator was fantastic for this book. Great character voices, pace, and steady volume throughout.

Great Narrator

I love it when a narrator “disappears” into the story. It was my first listen / reading of Our Mutual Friend so I’ll need another go at it. As with all Dickens novels, it takes more than once to absorb all the characters, wit, wisdom, and charm of his writing. This narration really elevated the already wonderful story.

Fabulous narrator

Highly recommend listening to this engaging story, and cheers to Dickens once again! All the characters come alive to make this worth every minute of your time.

Cracking story, excellent narration!

Several plots are weaved together exploring how money and power effects people. I enjoyed the narration.

Several plots

For all its characters and settings, it is a sinple story. Less melodrama, more realism than in his other works. The moral firmness of Mr & Mrs Boffin is the pivot of this spawling work.

Complexity made sinple

Off with a very slow start but finally finds it’s pace and we can again enjoy a good story with villians and heroines. Dickens seems to grow more romantic as he ages and more kind to his female characters. Unfortunately the narrator was not great with the female voices.

Mature, patient Dickens
