Something is wrong with the androids at Fort Thomas and it's up to Paige and her new friends to find out what. When an explosion levels a secret lab in the dead of night, an experimental computer virus is unleashed on the world invading artificially intelligent workers and soldiers. Once infected, these synthetic humans experience 1 of 2 side-effects: sentience or corruption. Thirty years later, the military and governments of the world are still struggling to cope with the shock. Synthetics are met with distrust by most, subjugation by some, and acceptance at arms-length by the rest.
To further study the rising sentience in the world’s robotic population, the military has recruited the best and brightest scientific minds to research this mysterious virus. Unfortunately for 13-year-old Paige Bryan, her parents are 2 of those minds chosen, and she finds herself moving to Fort Thomas - a military base full of sentient machines. When soldiers start to malfunction and a strange little girl arrives, Paige and the scrappers of Ft. Thomas soon find themselves swept up in a mystery that, left unsolved, may mean the end of the already fragile peace between humans and synthetics.
Humor, mystery, and action abound! Don't miss a single word of the fun!

I listened to the audiobook with its excellent narration but also read portions on my Kindle. I didn’t want the book to be over!
It was a tremendous novel involving artificial intelligence, advanced technology, but also with well-drawn characters and relationships that developed throughout the story. I loved the combination of fiction, sci-fi, a bit pf mystery but not being a dry “hard’ science fiction. While there’s plenty of salty language, it was natural and not brutal or constant.
After finishing the book, I looked for a sequel on audible or Kindle but it’s not published yet. I do hope this author is able to continue this excellent first published novel. I happened to catch a bit of the author’s blog in which she comments onnthe challenges of “making it’ as an author.
So if you enjoy science fiction, please give this one a try— it’s worth a credit for sure.
I also looked for more novels with this narrator, but the others were a different style of sci-fi (more like action movies) and not to my taste.
Clever, insightful, compassionate, optimistic

"A promise from him was like a bag of chips - half full & mostly broken"
As a follower of Christ, listening made me cringe because I disagree with the "religious nuts" and dislike the cliche portrayal of hateful "crazy Christians" but I understand it creates conflict for the storytelling so I'm trying to not let it affect my overall rating.
The sample really is what hooked me. I was searching for something newly released in the fantasy section and out of 30 different samples this one stuck with me the most. It was still on my mind a few days later so I renewed my audible membership just to buy it. Sample takes place about 7hrs in.
Thank you AJ Bass for sharing!
Entertaining

Paige, who is basically a really smart, sarcastic girl, gets swept up in the business of the "grown up world" around her. And rather than being an annoying teenage character like so many books have - I really liked her. She was a well-written, very capable character.
All of the characters are really well written by the author actually... even the side characters. They all have lives and personalities... and Phil reads them all in expert fashion.
A.J. Bass has created a very real, very interesting future where the U.S. is no longer the big, happy place we've come to know. It's fractured into 5 new countries and she handles the history of this very well.
**EDIT** I forgot to mention that I LOVE the additional short-story added at the end. Who doesn't want more of Fer?!?
I really hope book 2 is coming because I really want more of this.
Great Listen, Fun Story, Excellent Narrator!

Now, let's talk about the book itself. I know it's early days, being only mid-January, but Paige's Story could very well be my favorite, most remembered, and most remarkable read of 2020. It is going to be very hard to beat. It is just that good. The characters, the story, the tempo, the drama...I was so invested in it that I laughed and cried and gasped right along with the characters. This was an absolute joy to listen to and I can't recommendit enough.
I loved this so much!
