nice cozy. narrator needs improvement.

the story is a nice cozy. the narrator can improve. more intonation is needed, reading too flat. Barker's male voice is horrible. otherwise ok.

Okay story, robotic narration

It was a pretty good story. It had all the right pieces parts to make up a good cozy mystery. The killer was not a surprise, but I still enjoyed it. I wish the characters were a little more 3-dimensional, though. I might read another Agatha Frost mystery if I run out of my usual authors and need a fix.

The narration, however, was awful. I purchased the book in both Kindle and Audible because it was cheaper that way. The audio turned out to be a waste of money. I started to listen to the audio version several times and just could not get past the first couple of paragraphs. The narrator sounded like a robot. It sounded like Siri was reading to me. No inflexion, no personality. Just flat, monotone reading. I am glad I had the Kindle or I would have never gotten through this book.

Glad I only spent $3

I was curious as to what this story I’ve already read through several times would be like with audio, and I’m thoroughly disappointed with the narrator. The combination of the editing and inflection sounds like Siri reading British news. It gets *slightly* better as it goes on, but I doubt I’ll listen again.

It was okay

While not a regretful read, there were parts that the author went way out of the way to explain a back story that lost me. I am glad I finished, but almost stopped listening a few times.

Good Story but...

Narrator needs to work on her male voices. Her detective Barker sounded like a cross between Lurch and a dim witted gangster. It almost made me stop listening on several occasions. But cute cozy story.

Sweet Treats, Cake Thief and Murder

Julia South is back home, finally living her dream of owning a small café, after her good-for-nothing husband packed her bags and left them on the steps when he took up with another woman. Back in Peridale, Julia has family and her café . . . and a new start. But when one of her pickiest customers turns up dead, Julia is determined to find out who did the deed . . . and why. Her neighbor, Detective Inspector Barker Brown tries warning her away, but Julia isn’t deterred. Fearful that her best friend since childhood will be blamed for the murder, Julia digs deeper and deeper into the case. This is a short listen, and at first the narration took some getting used to. The mystery of the break ins at the café made for an interesting side story. I really like the folks in the small town of Peridale . . . all except for a few. Never discovered who the murderer was . . . BIG surprise! Excellent ending to the story, all the way around! I will definitely go on to the next in the series.

Could not have been read faster

The narrator read this book so fast that it was stripped of much of the potential enjoyment. The story was a little disjointed and "first-book-y" but in general that's not something I mind. But the speed it was read at undermined the whole experience. One small thing: the love interest didn't make sense: the detective went from rudely calling our protagonist the wrong name to being Mr. Right pretty quickly.

Cozy mystery cafe

This book was good! I read it straight thru, no breaks. Charming murder mystery with a bit of romance.
