About this listen

Larsa is a dhampir - half vampire, half human. In the gritty streets and haunted moors of gothic Ustalav, she's an agent for the royal spymaster, keeping peace between the capital's secret vampire population and its huddled human masses. Yet when a noblewoman's entire house is massacred by vampiric invaders, Larsa is drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse that will reveal far more about her own heritage than she ever wanted to know.

Loved it!

Great story with good characters that are not full of angst or unbelievable in their actions. They do the best with what they can against some very interesting circumstances.

Also, the narration is perfect. A good narrator makes for a great listen where you can focus on the story and this audiobook has a great one. I’ll be looking for more books read by her.

Very strong until the end.

Wanted a little more from the ending personally, fantastic otherwise. Wish Ilyana voiced more novels.

Could barely finish

Multiple first person views with the same voice make this book almost impossible to follow. I'd rather have a single first person view or different voices for the character.

tedious and often confusing, not worth the credit

The first chapter starts off well. The MC in the summary, a half vampire is apparently doing criminal elimination. Chaprer 2 switches to a completely different MC. I thought there was a recording error. I kept listening because the reader was obviously the same. It was annoying that more time wasn't spent on the god she follows and her order. The chapters proceede to alternate between these 2 MC. The priestess wasn't in the plot summary. This is annoying because she is nearly half the book. The reader's characters sound closely alike. It gets confusing trying to figure out who is doing what and where. I never did really understand why thie priestess was being persecuted by a superior. It was easy to understand the half vampires role. I found myself giving up on keeping things straight. The ending was a let down. The probability is strong that I will not get more books by this author.

I'm sure this is a good story...

Like some of the other Pathfinder Tales books, this novel features multiple 'character perspectives'. and while they are announced at the start of each chapter, the narrator makes no attempt to help the listener distinguish the perspectives with different voices, accents, or inflections.

This isn't a critique of the author. But rather a critique of the narrator.

It is alright

This is probably one of those instances where READING the story would have been preferable to LISTENING to it. The chapters alternate between perspectives of 2 characters, both female, and the narrator has difficulty creating a distinctive difference between the two voices.

It took about 20 chapters before I could discern the slight vocal patterns apart for Jidane and Larsa. At points in the story whee there is a great deal of dialogue between these characters it can become confusing as to who says and believes what.

The story itself is alright, but a little predictable and the threat never seems to build up to anything worrisome. Some good characterizations and some of the secondary characters are quite appealing but the bulk of the story felt cumbersome rather than engaging.
