About this listen

Persuasion, Jane Austen's final novel, follows the romance of Anne Elliot and naval officer Frederick Wentworth. They were happily engaged until Anne's friend, Lady Russell, persuaded her that Frederick was "unworthy". Now, eight years later, Frederick returns, a wealthy captain in the navy, while Anne's family teeters on the edge of bankruptcy. They still love each other, but their past mistakes threaten to keep them apart.Public Domain (P)2009 Alpha DVD LLC Classics

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

NO. The reader spoke in monotone, ignored punctuation, and mispronounced MANY words. It was frustrating to listen to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Persuasion?

Of COURSE, it's the LETTER!

How could the performance have been better?

The reader was just terrible. The whole book felt like one sentence full of mispronounced words. For one example, shew is pronounced like show, but the reader kept pronouncing it like shoe.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The LETTER, it's the LETTER from Captain Wentworth to Anne!

Any additional comments?

I'll probably buy a different audio version of this book.

Great Story, Terrible Reader

Beloved story. Stilted narration with some awkward pronunciation mistakes. The recording had numerous repetitions and blank gaps.

Disappointing

This is a wonderful novel full of comedy and irony, but the bland and inflectionless narration made it almost impossible to tolerate.

Very Disappointing Narration

Any additional comments?

This is a bad recording. The chapters cut off and the reader often repeats lines.

Terrible performance

This is the first time I have ever felt so motivated to write a bad review. The narrator was so irritating that I found it hard to listen to the story. She did improve slightly by the end of the book, but it was painful.

There were also recording issues with this book, a couple of places the story either skipped the end of a sentence or repeated it.

I LOVE Jane Austen and this was really disappointing.

Bad Recording and Narrator is irritating

I enjoyed the story very much. The narrator spoke a little too quickly sometimes, and it jumped several times, skipping at least a few sentences here and there. There's a reason it's cheap. I love Jane Austen, though, and here she excels once again at creating compelling, realistic characters.

Good book; bad recording

I love this story. It is my favorite Austen book. I listen to it over and over and never grow tired of it. Even though the reader’s performance is a bit staccato, the love story is just so passionate that any reader can do the story justice. I’ve wanted to purchase a better version, with a better reader, but quite frankly it wouldn’t matter. I listen to it over and over again for the ending. When the the two lovers reveal their love for one another, I’m totally in the story. She is me and he is what I wish my husband could be: young, handsome, accomplished and passionately in love with me.

Love Jane Austen
