About this listen

The Pimsleur® Method: the easiest, fastest way to learn a new language. Completely portable, easily downloadable, and lots of fun. You'll be speaking and understanding in no time flat!

German Level 1 Lessons 26-30 builds on material taught in prior units. Each lesson provides 30 minutes of spoken language practice, with an introductory conversation and new vocabulary and structures. Detailed instructions enable you to understand and participate in the conversation. Each lesson contains practice for vocabulary introduced in previous lessons. The emphasis is on pronunciation and comprehension and on learning to speak German. These units contain reading lessons designed to teach you to sound out words with correct pronunciation and accent. In addition, combined reading lessons from all the units are included at the end. These lessons, which total about one hour, will provide you with an introduction to reading German. A reading booklet to be used with the audio lessons is also included in PDF format.

Critic reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

Pimsleur method - slow and steady

For audio-based language training the Pimsleur method is very effective to build and retain vocabulary, phrases, and grammatical concepts. I have used this method in German and Russian with good results complimented with other products - particularly Michel Thomas method. Pimsleur can seem plodding at times but it does work. To assemble the entire multi volume units is not inexpensive - the investment appears to be worthwhile. You hear the native speakers and learn correct pronunciation and tone before you can get into bad habits.

Great Way to Learn German!

This program is well thought out, well written, and well performed. I have nothing but good things to say about the course and the Pimsleur learning method. I highly recommend it.

Just one suggestion to the beginning German language student: As a native English speaker, I highly recommend you take some time to learn and understand some basic German grammar before you begin this course. I know Pimsleur doesn’t recommend it, but you’ll find beginning your language study with a little pre-knowledge of German grammar to be very helpful. It will help you to understand such things as the German Der,Die, and Das articles that we don’t have in English and why they change so much depending on their placement in a sentence. This fore knowledge will answer a lot of questions for you in advance and help take some of the frustration out of learning the German language.

Again, I highly recommend this course. As I stated previously, it is very well done. I learned more German and retained more of what I learned using the Pimsleur method than I ever did in all the German courses I took in college. This course is a great way to learn German.

Great Program with flawed execution

The first several units of German Phase 1 were excellent. As you get further along, things get more complex as you would expect, but the dead time allowed for you to come up with an answer does not increase. Of course you can hit pause, but while you're driving that's not very convenient.
Also, noun/pronoun/adjective declension is a concept completely foreign to English speakers and hard to learn. Early on, the program did a good job of clarifying endings in phrases such as "mit meiner Familie". Later in the program though the clarification went away. With the German speakers increasing in speed, endings "e", "er", and "en" become hard to distinguish.
