About this listen

When a giant inflatable Halloween witch goes missing in the Pineapple Port retirement community, Charlotte's eager to nab the culprit. Before she can lift a fingerprint, someone threatens to kill a new neighbor who looks like an adorable Pomeranian but possesses a disturbing talent for revenge. Moments later, a stranger demands the return of a mysterious wooden box - or else.

Charlotte's boyfriend, Declan, isn't having a great morning either. His calculating ex-girlfriend has returned to claim she's the rightful owner of his pawn shop. She's livid he's found a new lady, too.

Eh. Things could be worse. At least Charlotte doesn't know that a mojito-swilling killer who fed his grandmother to a cat is on his way to Pineapple Port!

Very funny, light-hearted mystery series. Why aren't books three, four and five not available? I would definitely purchase the entire series. Very funny characters!

A fun series of mysteries

In Pineapple Mystery Box by by Amy Vansant, Charlotte has decided to become a private investigator, so she gets the help of Seamus, the uncle of her boyfriend, Declan. As a licensed PI, Seamus has the qualifications to let Charlotte do her internship hours under him. But the problem is that the community of Pineapple Port doesn't have any crime for her to investigate, except maybe the case of the person who illegally put flyers advertising a new private investigation business in the mailboxes without stamps.

But suddenly three cases arise all at once. Someone has pranked the neighborhood by switching out the lawn ornaments and stealing Witchypoo, the blow-up witch on top of Darla's house. Then, when Charlotte canvasses the neighborhood about the vandalism, she finds Gloria hunkering down inside her home, certain someone is trying to kill her. She has received a death threat letter, and soon has someone set fire to a cardboard box full of dry leaves outside Gloria's backyard. Then third, a man posing as Mafia goes after Jackie, Seamus' girlfriend who lives in the retirement community, demanding a box that she already sold at a yard sale. Together, the community, led by Charlotte and Seamus, work to locate the solutions to the cases.

Further, Declan is having problems of his own, as his ex-girlfriend has arrived back in town after disappearing for a year. The daughter of Seamus' ex-partner in his second- hand shop has come back to claim that she found a will giving the pawn shop to her mother, causing it to be her own inheritance. Stephanie intends to take over both the business and Declan and orders him to break things off with Charlotte.

Pineapple Mystery Box was a fun, humorous mystery with some very silly scenes. For example, there is a fun Halloween costume contest in which they get Stephanie to play Lady Godiva. They also stage a protest in which they get their dogs to go "do theit business" on their enemy's front lawn. The plot takes various twists and turns, and we are unsure which are important and which minor to the cases.

I also enjoy the fun characters in this book. It has a creative setting of a 26-year-old woman's living in a retirement community. Thus, her friends are all senior citizens until she meets Declan in the previous book, Pineapple Lies. And dating while living in a senior community is not a simple prospect. I especially liked Declan's uncle, Seamus, a bit of a scoundrel who served as a confidential informant for the Miami Police as well as a private investigator.

Rosemary Benson does a good job of performing the audio edition of this book. She uses good timing and expressions as she voices this book in making it come alive. I also like the voices she has created for each character and way she makes this book all the more fun.

Pineapple Mystery Box was a very fun book. It had a lot of delightful moments, with a creative set of mystery plots, giving me a great listening experience the whole time. I liked the variety of characters as well as the creative plot, and I really had fun with the denouement. I give this book five stars.
