About this listen

A spaceship crash survivor, Addie Rye is lucky to be alive. But being stuck on a primitive planet isn’t exactly the epitome of luck.

With no way home, Addie has no choice but learn how to use stone tools and catch her dinner before cooking it, all while attempting to befriend a tribe of wild nomads who inhabit this planet.

His injuries rendering him useless in the eyes of his tribe; embattled Zoark is content to occupy the lowest rung of the social ladder. When Addie ingratiates herself into his tribe, he doesn’t trust her, and goes out of his way to make her feel unwelcome. But soon, he is captivated by her grit and resilience and enchanted by her human spirit. Against his will, his long-dormant protective instincts come to life.

As the tribe moves around this vast alien steppe, tensions mount among its people, augmented by dwindling resources, violent predators, and marauding rivals. Only the strongest will survive, and Zoark needs Addie to keep him going. Knowing the fate of the tribe may one day depend on this man, Addie agrees to his impersonal proposition. But can her human heart remain detached?

I don't know.

I've listened to this book SOOOO many times. I genuinely don't know lol! It just resinates with something inside me. The world building and character development are top. It just seems more real to me. There is no insta love, communication, or understanding. It's gritty and dirty, with realistic emotions from the characters. I would sincerely love to see a continuation of this story. 💜

Loved it!

Lydia Hope is a new author for me in the world of science fiction, and I am thrilled to have found her. She writes original, compelling stories with characters with depth and complexity that make it hard to stop listening. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

descriptions are lacking

I really enjoyed this story. However, the character descriptions are lacking. I just couldn't visualize what they looked like with the information provided.

No epilogue but a good read

Will have to see if there is a sequel. It seems like there are a lot of open ends that could lead to other storylines.

Mixed feelings but mostly good

I have a few mixed feelings about this book but overall it’s good. The story is unique and the relationship development is complex, takes time, and is believable. And the writing is good, skilled. But there are a few flaws in the telling that I didn’t like. And FYI, this is one of those alien worlds that it’s like going back to the Stone Age rather than outer space.

Pros:
1) The relationship isn’t jump into bed and suddenly in love. Real character and relationship development. Distrust to some trust to friendship to more trust and respect to sex to deep trust to love. Believable.

2) The sex isn’t over the top nor uber-graphic, which is what I prefer, personally.

3) The plot and conflicts are not present in half the other books in this genre - yeah! So the story was unexpected and not predictable.

4) There is a true encounter with another culture and value system. Although the main character disagrees with some of their values, she respects that it is their world and culture. Although she does make headway in two areas she is passionate about (areas that have parallels in our society today if you think about), she doesn’t overtly make changes out of judgement but out of caring for her friends.

5) The story isn’t all about the couple but the woman’s name experiences in an alien culture and her becoming part of a community. Also development and growth of multiple characters.

Cons:
1) I almost didn’t get past the first chapter. Not a spoiler, just a clarification: the women in the city at the beginning are all humans! The men are the all aliens. The women’s language is a human language, and the men’s is the language of that planet. The author is totally unclear about that and it is confusing. I was lost for a big part of the book without that info. They all crashed on the same planet over the years. My problems with this, besides confusion that was highly distracting: With so many crashes on the planet over time, why has Earth not better avoided the problem and why aren’t there more human men? There is explanation for our leading lady’s crew and ship but not the other women’s. Why hasn’t Earth checked on them, if so many?

2) Poor science. How does this planet have no fire and no water? Especially when there is life and moisture can be found in plants? The water had to come from somewhere. (Lack of wells can make sense, but total lack of water???) And even though the people who evolved there haven’t figured out fire, the human women would have out of our knowledge of it and the necessity to cook our meat. And the thing with the metal, the chemistry doesn’t add up. I question the behavior of the two suns, too. And, as a ceramicist, don’t get me started on the flaws with making clay bowls without fire.

So, overall I recommend this book, just be aware of what I wrote about the people in the city at the beginning and push through the beginning in the city. The story makes more sense after that part. But don’t skip it as it is referred to throughout the book. And have a tolerance for the bad science.

Narration was good. No complaints there.
