About this listen

A decomposing body...a severed head in a closet...a macabre meeting with "Mother" - mystery writer Lorinda Lucas tosses yet another paperback in the trash, appalled at the gruesome direction of today's crime fiction. She's even more disturbed at the half-starved state of Roscoe, the cat next door. Before Lorinda left for her latest book tour, Roscoe was as plump and pampered as her own two felines, Had-I and But-Known.

It only takes a modicum of sleuthing to find out that in Lorinda's absence Roscoe's owner, Macho Magee, has acquired a new girlfriend - a harridan who has put the gentle Macho and his pet on a strict diet. And that's only the first disturbing news in Brimful Coffers, the once - quiet village that now includes a writer's colony. Lorinda soon discovers that a hit-and-run has ended a child's life, professional jealousy has taken a deadly twist, and murder is just around the catty-corner....

The banter is the best part of the book

The relationship between The three main characters is the best. Especially in this book. Machos drama is hilarious. I enjoy that the whole book isn’t a whodunnit but getting to know the characters before anyone is murdered.

The narration is really well with the main characters but there are a lot of them to recall and they tend to get lost in the conversations, but the main characters are great. Best of all the book is great without sex and swearing. That takes far more talent than to be a shock writer! Hope to see these three and the cats soon.

fun story

I searched up books by Blackstone Publishing because they are usually really clean and benign, so I ended up with this one. I was a little disappointed that it does have some mild swearing, and mention of sex. However, it's more pushback from the fictional writers on not wanting to put sex in their stories. One man does a collaboration book and is appalled by the sex scenes in the book from the other writer. None of these are discussed. So, nothing crossed that line for me. It stayed appropriate while also expressing pushback against all of the trend towards that.

Nice diverse dynamic of adult friends that are all mystery writers and have their tight knit friend group. They highly spoil and respect their pets. It's cute.

Humor meets cozy mystery

There's some humor in this cozy mystery and cats and dogs. I was starting to feel like I was listening to an Agatha Christie story with the narrator's voice. It has murder, mystery and a tiny bit of suspense.

Sad it’s the last.

Classic cozy with v British cozy characters I would have liked to get to know better but for the author’s unfortunate passing. Also, got a little kick from the writer’s brief passages taking the piss out of modern mystery writers.

Kind of fun

There were some good elements but the chapters that start with whatever book Lorinda is reading cause some confusion at first - and the writing in the pretend books is beyond ridiculous. I know that’s the point but it’s still pretty painful, even in short glimpses. The rest of the book has some fun quirky things and good plot beginnings but they just never flesh out in any way that I found compelling. I didn’t feel like any of the storylines had either a believable or satisfying ending. If it hadn’t been free, I would have returned it before I finished it.

Good

A decent follow up. Poor Roscoe is put on an involuntary diet and so has his owner. The group if mystery writers to include Lucinda are not fond of this turn of events nor of the accident that claimed the life of a child. Gemma who witnessed part of the accident is distraught and spends most of the book in a dither.
