About this listen

Award-winning historian and best-selling author Paul L. Maier has created a compelling style of documentary fiction. He uses what is historically known of Pilate's life, adds in the known political climate of first-century Judea, and unveils the colorful, untold story that changed history. He provides intriguing answers to questions such as:

  • What really happened at that most famous of trials?
  • Were the proceedings against Jesus legal?
  • Did cowardice or necessity motivate Pilate's judgment?
  • What became of this successful Roman politician after his verdict?

Filling in the details of Pilate's early career in Rome, Maier captures the drama of imperial Rome under Tiberius Caesar, the plotting of his political allies and enemies, and his relationship with his beloved but ambitious wife, Procula. His great moment arrives as he exchanges the intrigues of Rome for the bewildering environment of Judea, navigating new and dangerous waters. In Pontius Pilate, Maier paints a picture for modern listeners to help them understand the behind-the-scenes complexities, political and religious realities, and ultimately, the humanity of the people we know from Scripture.

The historical relationship of the Jewish leaders and the Roman governor. I especially liked the view of the arrest and prosecution of Jesus from the Roman viewpoint.

A beautifully woven novel. Excellent narration and an excellent story. I really enjoyed the broadening of the personal story of Pontius Pilate. The writer crafted a compelling story that filled in the historical gaps that are missing from the Biblical account. Highly recommended if you enjoy historical fiction.

I very much enjoyed this read. The reader mispronounced several times, which I found distracting, but did an above average job, overall.

Great book full of history!

I usually don’t read or like historical fiction books. I even thought I knew something about Pontius Pilate, but when my wife started reading the book for her book club, I began to listen with her.

I enjoyed the book immensely & would highly recommended it to anyone who enjoys a great book! The author has done an amazing job & the audio book was very well done!

I really enjoyed this different take on Pilate.
It makes you think and understand that his story isn't as cut and dry as has been presented.

Pontius Pilate is a fascinating tale! It approaches the holy lands saga from an entirely unique perspective that is both fresh and balanced – that from the man who had Roman jurisdictional authority over Jerusalem. If the events were truly foretold, he was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, he is forever remembered in the “Confiteor” of the Roman Catholic Church (“suffered under Pontius Pilate …”). Highly recommend.

Good story wrapped in excellent description of history. Characters were developed well and stayed true to that.

Pontius Pilate is the most brilliant work of historical fiction. Maier has captured my attention, spun my imagination, and sparked a new desire for reading. I’m a 21 year old college student who couldn’t care less about books… yet this book.. WOW!
Highly recommended.

A MUST READ!

The story was captivating and moved at a nice clip. Between the historical biblical facts and the fictional bridges that fill the gaps, it’s an awesome listen.
