Publisher's summary

An uproarious, sensual novel, Leone Ross' Popisho conjures a world where magic is everywhere, food is fate, politics are broken, and love awaits.

Everyone in Popisho was born...with a little something.... The local name for it was cors. Magic, but more than magic. A gift, nah? Yes. From the gods: a thing that felt so inexpressibly your own.

Somewhere far away - or maybe right nearby - lies an archipelago called Popisho. A place of stunning beauty and incorrigible mischief, destiny, and mystery, it is also a place in need of change.

Xavier Redchoose is the macaenus of his generation, anointed by the gods to make each resident one perfect meal when the time is right. Anise, his long lost love, is on a march toward reckoning with her healing powers. The governor’s daughter, Sonteine, is getting married, her father demanding a feast out of turn. And graffiti messages from an unknown source are asking hard questions. A storm is brewing. Before it comes, before the end of the day, this wildly imaginative narrative will take us across the islands, their history, and into the lives of unforgettable characters.

Popisho is a masterful delight: a playful love story, a portrait of community, a boldly sensual meditation on desire and addiction, and a critique of the legacies of corruption and colonialism. Inspired by the author's Jamaican homeland, inflected with rhythms and textures of an amalgam of languages, it is a dazzling, major work of fiction, in conversation with the likes of Gabriel García Márquez, Toni Morrison, and Arundhati Roy.

A love story to humanity.

I never write reviews, but this book spoke to my soul with love and drama. I can’t explain or express what this book has done but please take the journey because it’s so worth it.

Succulent, sumptuous, satisfying

What a gem of a story. I loved the juicy, colorful, magical world the author transports readers to, made all the better by her magnificent voice.

Weirdly wonderful

This novel was fantastical but rooted in realities. The descriptions were a feast for the imagination. It was an experience.

Palimpsest of nonsense

Ross wove, decoupaged, painted, stuccoed, and duct taped together a fantastical world of absurdity that amounted to nonsense. Any themes or morals, if they exist, were completely obscured by too many threads to nowhere.
The audible performance was fabulous, though. I read & listened simultaneously.

Relentlessly Charming

Well, I loved this story. I want everyone to read it, and I’ve been telling them so since about the time of the Great Separation in this charming story about the myriad charms (and opposite-of-charms) of the people and place of Popisho.

I also thought the narrator did an outstanding job of hitting all the right notes, bringing the characters to life, and helping me almost smell the spice in the air (and in the interactions).

The redolent, shimmering magic of Popisho is different from all the other magic I know, and I can’t help but feel that if I bumped into the author’s fingers, it might rub off on my skin like a fine, silvery glitter, adding a spark to the rest of my day

Incredible World building and captivating storylines

This is definitely a book you will reread/ relisten to. The way the author blends topics like grief, corruption, and addiction with magical elements should be studied. The audiobook only elevates the storyline and really brings the characters to life, I can honestly say there were several times I laughed out loud from listening to this book on my way to work!

The author makes it come alive!

I don't know if I would have enjoyed this half as much reading it on the page. I am usually leery of authors reading their own work, but Leone Ross made these characters and this magical place leap off the page. I want to see this made into a film with Idris Elba abd Lupita Nyong'o! I didn't want it to end!
