About this listen

There’s a village an hour from London. It’s no different from many others today: one pub, one church, redbrick cottages, some public housing, and a few larger houses dotted about. Voices rise up, as they might anywhere, speaking of loving and needing and working and dying and walking the dogs. This village belongs to the people who live in it, to the land and to the land’s past.

It also belongs to Dead Papa Toothwort, a mythical figure local schoolchildren used to draw as green and leafy, choked by tendrils growing out of his mouth, who awakens after a glorious nap. He is listening to this 21st-century village, to its symphony of talk: drunken confessions, gossip traded on the street corner, fretful conversations in living rooms. He is listening, intently, for a mischievous, ethereal boy whose parents have recently made the village their home: Lanny.

An adult fairy tale with a Goblin lurking feel. Lots of weird, cringy moments and a typical fairy tale ending. I love the Author’s writing style and it would have gotten five stars from me if the author would have continued down the path with Lanny that he built up in the first third of the book, instead the character fell flat for me. The performance of this book is fun and theatrical. I loved it! Highly recommended to those who like uniquely weird books.

Adult Fairy Tale

I should have listened before purchasing. I listen to books to hear the authors words, not the overly dramatic imposition of theatrical readings that impose interpretations and obfuscate and dominate the interaction of listener/reader and writer. I retreated to the printed book after listening to this as long as I could force myself

Terrible reading

I've read Lanny at least 5 times, as it's a book I use to teach my English comp students, but this was the first time I've listened to the audiobook. It brought a whole other layer to the storytelling and was truly magical.

I was listening and reading Kindle in tandem and stopped the Kindle and just listened to the audible version. The performance was so great I wanted to savour it. was bummed when it was over.

I almost couldn't finish but I am glad I managed it - really enjoyed parts 1 and 3. part 2 will rip your heart out.

every parent's worst fear

Gets real heavy with themes of s/a and child abuse. Satisfying ending, but trigger warnings for sure.

Beautiful descriptions of both the profound and the mundane.

I was so looking forward to reading Lanny after having read Porter's first book, Grief Is the Thing With Feathers. Lanny does not disappoint. It is just as amazing in my opinion, yet all together different as it's more of a full length "mystery-type". This author has a style that is colorful, lyrical, poetic, and every other word that I can't think of at present!!! His storytelling captivates me and keeps my attention from beginning to end. I look forward to the next piece, and all that follow. BRAVO !!!!!!!

So Glad I've Discovered Max Porter !
