About this listen
Here are the excruciatingly funny adventures of Suzanne Vale — a young film star and drug addict — who survives a rehab clinic only to rejoin the equally harrowing world of Hollywood. Out there on the edge, despair flips into hilarity, and we're left laughing as Suzanne struggles to come to terms with her various fantasylands.
This stunning literary debut — read by author and actress Carrie Fisher herself — evokes the deliciously irreverent humor that formed the lens through which Fisher looked at life in the '80s: the stardom, the success, the sex — as well as the drugs, the desperation, and the insecurity.

Story
When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved—plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a teenager with an all-consuming crush on her costar, Harrison Ford.

A remarkably candid biography of the remarkably candid - and brilliant - Carrie Fisher. Thanks to his mother, Todd remained down to earth, his own man, but always close to his cherished mom, and to his sister through her meteoric rise to stardom and her struggle with demons that never diminished her humor, talent, or spirit.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

He is one of the longest-running cast members on Saturday Night Live, an American comedy genius renowned for his spot-on sendups of politicians and celebrities. But off-stage, Darrell Hammond’s life was anything but a joke. In CRAY, a special audio performance captured live onstage at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre, Hammond brings to life his acclaimed memoir, God, If You're Not Up There, I'm F*cked: Tales of Stand-Up, Saturday Night Live and Other Mind-Altering Mayhem.

Story
Breakfast of Champions (1973) provides frantic, scattershot satire and a collage of Vonnegut's obsessions. His recurring cast of characters and American landscape was perhaps the most controversial of his canon; it was felt by many at the time to be a disappointing successor to Slaughterhouse-Five, which had made Vonnegut's literary reputation.

Story
Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

Story
The victim of a painful past and a fatherless childhood, Dinah is searching for love that will last—or at least—a reasonable facsimile that comes with a warranty. Two years after the breakup of her marriage to the award-winning playwright, Dinah remains in limbo, not genuinely wanting him back but lacking a satisfying stand-in. She finds it hard to relinquish the "pink" girlish fantasy that a man will secure her happily ever after. When she fights to hold on to that now-extinct romance, Dinah finds herself in a variety of wild predicaments.

A remarkably candid biography of the remarkably candid - and brilliant - Carrie Fisher. Sourced by friends, colleagues, and witnesses to all stages of Fisher’s life, Carrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge is an empathic and even-handed portrayal of a woman who - as Princess Leia, but mostly as herself - was a feminist heroine, one who died at a time when we need her blazing, healing honesty more than ever.

Story
In December 2016, the world was shaken by the sudden deaths of Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, two unspeakable losses. The stunned public turned for solace to Debbie’s only remaining child, Todd Fisher. The son of "America’s Sweethearts" Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Todd grew up amid the glamorous wealth and pretense of Hollywood. Thanks to his mother, Todd remained down to earth, his own man, but always close to his cherished mom, and to his sister through her meteoric rise to stardom and her struggle with demons that never diminished her humor, talent, or spirit.

Solid 30 Crisis
I just turned 30 so I guess I'm being drawn to these kinds of stories currently. Stories about being stuck and making changes. Fisher's brutal honesty makes this novel pop for me, especially her performance.

I love Carrie Fisher!
I love Carrie Fisher but this was hard to follow. I recently read one of her books that was funny every chapter. I guess this was little dry for me.

Entertaining
Narration: well done. Carrie would have done well as a comedian.
Story: amusing in a necessarily poignant sort of way. A lot of wisdom here. Many interesting telling of personal experiences as well. Although humorous, more importantly, these recollections help us understand the “lived experiences” of addicts and the mentally ill.

I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THIS BOOK!
This is Carrie at her most clever. She is raw and witty, sad and eccentric. I couldn't put this book down. What a talent.

Great as a first novel
Carrie Fisher's first book, published when she was thirty-one—right after she did a stint in rehab, and only three years after she came to terms with her bipolar disorder diagnosis—is really best described as semi-autobiographical.
The woman could write: for a new author, this was a really strong debut, and part of the reason this was such a hit was that she simply stunned everyone with her talent and insight. Having said that, I found the change in narration styles throughout the book a bit confusing, but Carrie’s brutally honest humor and witty charm carry the story until the end.

Being 72 & closer to her Mom's age; I deeply grieve Carries passing as we will not be able to read her outrageously over the top take on 70ish & beyond.
