About this listen

When a day trip out of Las Vegas with his wife takes a turn for the worse, Jack is sure he has the ability to get them home.

But he has driven into something far beyond reason.

Rescue comes in the form of a desert hermit, but hope fades as the couple comes to realize that the nomad has no intention of letting them leave. A chance encounter with a kidnapped runaway and her crazed abductor leads them all farther into the wilderness - and closer to the cold brutality that isolation brings.

At the edge of his sanity, Jack begins to learn that playing by another's rules may be the only way to survive.

In a voice that is as hypnotizing as a desert mirage, debut novelist Samuel Parker entices listeners down a treacherous road, where the forces of good and evil are as crushing as the Mojave heat.

Great Quick Read - Suspense, Mystery and Intrigue

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Perfect book to keep you company on a trip, doing laundry, or any time you need the escape of a good book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Maybe I'm biased, but the female characters appealed to me more. They struggled with internal battles that were very well pictured for us but left us room to inflict our own flavor from life's experiences and therefore making the characters more real.

Have you listened to any of Dean Gallagher’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I believe this is my first novel read by Dean Gallagher. Enjoyed the audio performance. Good pace and accents. Maybe the higher pitched female voices were a tad overdone.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment in the cave when you placed every other suspense plot in it's place but the author took it in another direction.

Any additional comments?

Several valuable bits of life lessons in the novel that stuck w me. I can't say I've ever had a novel do that. I like it when books leave a piece of themselves w me.

Run. Don’t look back.

Hands down the worst book I’ve ever listened to. The prose was garish and clumsy. The story ridiculous. I didn’t care about any of the characters. And the narrator was hard to listen to, especially when he was changing to the voice of other characters. He would never be mistakes for a female! His voicing of female character lines were cringeworthy. I can’t believe the number of people who enjoyed this book. It makes me question our educational system.
