About this listen

In the summer of 1933, a man named Adolf Hitler is the new and powerful anti-Semitic chancellor of Germany. But in Los Angeles, no-nonsense secretary Liesl Weiss has concerns much closer to home. The Great Depression is tightening its grip, and Liesl is the sole supporter of two children, an opinionated mother, and a troubled brother.

Leon Lewis is a Jewish lawyer who has watched Adolf Hitler’s rise to power—and the increase in anti-Semitism in America—with growing alarm. He believes Nazi agents are working to seize control of Hollywood, the greatest propaganda machine the world has ever known. The trouble is that authorities scoff at his dire warnings.

When Liesl loses her job at MGM, her only choice is to work with Leon Lewis and the mysterious Agent Thirteen to spy on her friends and neighbors in her German American community. What Leon Lewis and his spies find is more chilling—and more dangerous—than any of them suspected.

Code Name Edelweiss is based on a true story, unknown until recent years: how a lone Jewish lawyer and a handful of amateur spies discovered and foiled Adolf Hitler’s plan to take over Hollywood.

Great writing, excellent reading. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and rooting for the god hits and angry at the bad guys. Very good read.

Brave people with lots of courage throughout this book. If not me, then, who? A very important statement.

This book has it all: Hollywood, spies, and Nazis and loads of danger. Best of all, it is based on true events in the 1930s when Adolf Hitler plotted to seize control of Hollywood and a ragtag team of spies worked to stop him. The author is masterful in weaving a story with well-developed characters and a dramatic plot. There are plenty of secrets, foiled plans, narrow escapes, all tied together. The author captures Hollywood a the time perfectly! A “must read” for anyone who likes historical fiction. You will not be disappointed!!! Narrators were superb at adding to the story.

Well written, well performed. A great story about a dark time in our history. I haven’t looked to see if there are more but I’m hoping this will be a series! I know I did find that at times the recording seemed clipped, making her voice almost sound like a computer reading the story. That was annoying but I got somewhat used to it. And the story was good enough to help me get over it.

Great Story

I liked the period of history this story covered. The writing was engaging. I found the MGM angle interesting.

Great attention to details.

Wow! This was American history that I had never heard. I was drawn into the story from the beginning, because the setting was unusual, at least for me. Liesl’s story of being a spy in the midst of a Nazi organization in LA evoked strong emotions. I was angry that the organization was able to take root and spread its message of hate. I was anxious while listening to risks Liesl took as a spy and the dilemma’s she had as a single mother. And I hurt for the ill-treatment of the Jews. I listened to the audiobook. Having a male and female voice added depth to the story. Highly recommend this book.
