About this listen

The second murderous installment of the Campbell and Carter Mysteries.

When old Monty discovers a dead body in his drawing room, it's up to Inspector Jess Campbell to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Monty is a recluse, holed up in his crumbling manor house being generally unpleasant to everyone, even those relatives he actually likes. When his family and locals claim they've never seen the murder victim before, Campbell smells a lie.

With the help of Superintendent Ian Carter, she will have to dig deep into the murky past of Monty and his family, all the way to the shocking truth.

Interesting plot; quirky characters

The authors description of Monte, the irascible character around whom, so much of the story revolves, drew me from the first few sentences.

As in her previous book, the solution requires characters to behave irrationally which, while this can be true, (in”real” life), I hope that the next book does not rely on this trope once again.

The character of the Superintendent continues to be undeveloped. His interests and motivations continue to be opaque.

We have learned more about the
Sergeant’s personality, who, so far, seems to be the character with the most potential for interest.

I believe the Inspector is meant to be an attractive character, but she teeters on immaturity and impulsiveness. She most definitely needs to be sent back to police procedure school as it somehow did not occur to her to get the registration number of a speeding car that almost hit her. It beggars belief that an inspector’s reflexes would be so sluggish.

I was unable to understand why the Superintendent would be at all interested in pursuing a relationship with her as seemed to be hinted toward the end of this book.

Enjoyable

The voice actor does a very good job reading, and it really adds to the story. I felt like the repeat characters are starting to have some personality, but I would like to see more. The story lacks in that area. The rest is great. I guessed early on who, but I wasn't sure why

All flows together at the end

These stories are all quiet cleaver, how they fit together at the end. I enjoy them immensely

good mystery BUT

I like the narration and the central theme but the story goes on and on plowing the v same field. you get the clues which lead to one character then the author introduces another Chace that drives v the sort in another direction. the sequence is repeated and repeated. it becomes tiresome.

Interesting plot

Horrible characters that are fascinating to get to know. Good resolution of convoluted relationships. Boring.

Intersting

I'll definitely pick up more in this series. The narration is excellent, although It's hard to hear the whispering parts, which are often internal thoughts.
