Publisher's summary

A simple case for a new beginning. That's all Jonathan needs. Some easy, little supernatural problem to gain Kelly Chan's trust, and keep her from walking out of his life forever.

The case goes from simple to deadly when Jonathan's actions wake an evil entity with murder on its agenda. The only way to stop it is to call in reinforcements from the Manhattan branch of Dragon Gate Industries (DGI). But calling DGI means dealing with the head of the division - Jonathan's older sister. She blames him for the death of their parents, so she'd rather see her brother run out of New York than lift a spell book to help.

Don't miss this exciting addition to the popular Jonathan Shade series!

A New Beginning

Razor Dreams is the seventh installment in the Jonathan Shade mysteries. This book starts the next story arc in this series. After having returned through time from the 1920’s and foiled the plot of Henry Winslow, Jonathan and crew have returned to current time, the same but different. Jonathan attempts to reconnect with his friends and find a new purpose in his life. Jonathan and Esther the ghost become involved in solving the mystery of an asylum that comes and goes on Ellis Island. A strange evil presence is discovered to have been released into the world and only Jonathan can vanquish it but it will take the help of DGI and Jonathan’s older sister, who has blamed him for the death of their parents and sister.

This installment was very interesting and sets the stage for the next story arc. The Anubis Knights lurk in the background as an ever present danger which is bound to show up in the future. I look forward to listening to the next book in this series. Jonathan and friends are always good for an interesting ride full of unexpected twists and turns.

Johnny Peppers does his usual excellent job narrating this book.

Interesting New Chapter in Series!

Razor Dreams: The Seventh Jonathan Shade Novel. Jonathan Shade Book 7 is written by Gary Jonas. The book is narrated by Joe Hempel. This is a series reboot somewhat after the events of the last novel. If you have followed along with the series you will understand. If not this will be a point you could jump into the series as some prior events are explained but the depth and full context are missing.

The story does hold the listener's attention throughout the entire production. The characters are not the same ones the readers and listeners have come to enjoy up to this point into the series. Not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing going forward. It did make for some frustrating listening in this story. The new setting of New York did add to the story as the city is almost a character. I recommend this new Johnathan Shade Novel for fans of the series.

The narration by Joe Hempel is just outstanding. He is Jonathan Shade. The way he does the character with snark and style is just a treasure for the ears. The production value is of the highest quality. I heard no problems during the entire performance. There were not any detectable flaws that I was able to hear during the entire performance. I did not hear any loops, breaks, or buzzing. The production was crisp and clear. Denton & White delivered excellent audiobook production I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Action packed, tension filled story

I was really excited to listen to the 7th Jonathan Shade audiobook and it did not disappoint. After the time travel events in the prior book, Jonathan struggles to re-establish relationships with Kelly and Rayna, and to see if they are capable of, or even want to, work together once again. Esther, who is no longer tied to the typewriter, is the only one who remains steadfast in her friendship with Shade. This story leads you on a thrilling, tension filled ride, where an evil, ethereal killer lurks in the shadows waiting to destroy everyone. The narrator did a great job of bringing out the sarcasm and action in the story and giving the characters individual voices. I love that the author revealed how Shade’s parents died, and how their death is linked to events in other books. This book is fast paced, suspenseful, action packed and laced with humour. The characters keep evolving and you never know what will happen next. I look forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Darker and convoluted

Jonatha, Kelly, Reina, and Esther are back in the present, but they are not the same as they once had been. There is tension among them, and Jonathan wants to prevent Kelly from leaving the group. Jonathan has found about a new mystery to investigate in New York City, but Kelly believes it is not important, and that Jonathan is just buying time to keep her within the group.

I am an absolute Jonathan Shade fan, and listening to this book has been like sharing time with old friends. I have missed them so much in the last months that I had to listen to this new installment without thinking it twice. I don’t think anyone will attempt to approach this book without reading the previous ones, but just a word of warning regarding this: This book is part of a series which plot has gotten really convoluted, please do not attempt to read this as a standalone. You will be lost. This book picks up where the previous one has left the story, and I have to say that this book’s foundations lay heavily on the previous ones, so I recommend reading them one after the other if possible.

Jonathan Shade’s novels have been getting darker and darker, and this one continues along that line, almost constituting a horror novel at times. The experiences the group has are so vivid that I kept being all the time the edge of my seat. There were some surprises along the way and some twists that I did not see coming. I am glad that Jonas is still able to amaze me, even after six books.

Joe Hempel delivered a masterful narration, with very heartfelt character interpretations. He had already become Jonathan in the first book of the series, but listening to his voice again, transported me instantaneously to the world created by Gary Jonas. There were some difficult character interpretations in this book: the relationship between Jonathan and Kelly was heavily damaged, and being able to show this to the listener was something crucial to be able to grasp the depth in this book. Joe Hempel did it justice magnificently, transmitting both characters’ complex emotions and creating the illusion of having real people interacting.

This book answers some important questions, but there are still important matters to be completely resolved. I am impatient to listen to the next one in the series. Please, Gary and Joe, don’t make us wait too long!
