About this listen

For over 1,000 years, Order and Chaos have molded the island of Recluce. The Saga of Recluce chronicles the history of this world through 18 books, L. E. Modesitt, Jr.'s longest and best-selling fantasy series. Recluce Tales: Stories from the World of Recluce collects 17 new short stories and four popular reprints spanning the thousand-year history of Recluce. First-time audiences will gain a glimpse of the fascinating world and its complex magic system, while longtime fans of the series will be treated to glimpses into the history of the world. Modesitt's essay "Behind the 'Magic' of Recluce" gives insight into his thoughts on developing the magical system that rules the Island of Recluce and its surrounding lands, while "The Vice Marshal's Trial" takes the listener back to the first colonists on Recluce. Old favorites, such as "Black Ordermage" and "The Stranger," stand side-by-side with thrilling new stories.

Critic reviews

"Helpfully, the stories present in the internal chronological order in which they occur in the world of Recluce. . . . complex and satisfying . . . Modesitt is excellent company." ( Kirkus)

Fill in the Blanks…

While listening to this book I thought of former radio personality, Paul Harvey, who gave us: “The rest of the story.” We are given the opportunity to look at many of the support characters woven into the history of Recluse. I totally enjoyed the experience!

Recluse lovers, this is for you

This might just be the best companion book to a series that I have ever read/listened to. Instead of feeling like short stories, this feels like extensions onto the novels of things that were hinted at or left hanging. Minor characters are given voice, reason and life and a different perspective on the Chaos Order balance.

If the series speak to you, you will love this book. And not a single hedge row.

He is Perfect with all the Recluce Saga books

Any additional comments?

If you haven't read (or listened to) the Recluce Saga- which, by the way, you should- this might not make sense to you. But for those of us who have been following L E Modesitt Jr through this wonderful adventure, RECLUCE TALES is fantastic.
P.S. The last story is amazingly poignant.

Good, but a guide would be useful

It's been a while since I've read the books that I often didn't remember which book the short story referenced, so a guide or explanation that way would be useful. I did love the story telling though! Well done as always.
