About this listen

We live in an increasingly technological, urbanized, and hyper-productive society, one that often leaves little time for connecting with the natural world in any meaningful way. As we get further away from nature—often experiencing it only as we travel from one indoor space to another or view it through glass windows and screens—we are losing something vital to our mental and physical well-being. How can we rebuild our relationship with nature? And why is it so important that we do?

Across the six lessons of Reconnect with Nature: Lessons from the Natural World, author and conservationist Jennifer Verdolin draws on Indigenous traditions and contemporary science to inspire you to integrate more of the natural world into your life, no matter where you live. You’ll learn about our deep biological need for nature and about the influence that natural environments and other animals have on your day-to-day life. You’ll also be provided with activities and tools to help you be more observant about the natural world around you.

As you learn more about the importance of having a relationship with the natural environment, Jennifer will also help you understand how the human connection with nature has changed over time and across cultures, enriching your understanding of your place in the world. She will also outline the ways disconnection from nature affects us, including its influence on physical health, mood, anxiety, and stress levels. With this understanding in place, you’ll then be ready to build a healthy and joyful connection to the natural world that can enrich your life in amazing ways.

I like the author emphasizes the power of nature within each human. The book is a great companion.

The book is inspiring, hopeful.

Appreciate the encouragement to spend time outdoors and the attempt at scientific references. Overall it felt too "woo-woo," especially casually claiming plants respond to human voices.

You lost me with your cultural generalizations. There are both native and immigrant people that care about the environment.

Indigenous good, European bad

This is a prolonged and repetitive ad for an associated workbook that you can order. I’ve given it three chapters and I’m done ; go out and take a walk. Take some deep breaths and enjoy nature. But you knew that.

As a teacher, I really appreciated Dr. Jen’s logical and thoughtful approach in this audiobook. The pacing is just right—there’s enough time for meaningful reflection without it ever feeling slow or overly introspective. It keeps you engaged while still encouraging deeper thought.

I’m especially looking forward to using the companion workbook with an 11-year-old student I tutor in language arts. The materials are a great extension of the audio content and seem well-suited for young learners.

I highly recommended this course for educators, parents, or anyone looking for a clear and balanced approach to learning and self-development.
