About this listen

The second installment of Orson Scott Card's best-selling series The Tales of Alvin Maker.

In the first tale of Alvin Maker—Seventh Son—listeners are introduced to a pioneer America where magic works and special talents are utilized in marvelous ways. In this second installment in the Tales of Alvin Maker, we learn more about those talents—both the minor gifts of white people (starting fires, finding water) and the much grander gifts of the Indians, whose lives are filled with a beautiful green music. Young Alvin Maker, the seventh son of a seventh son, is a Maker. Lolla-Wossiky—an Indian whose fate is closely linked with Alvin's—has heard black noise in his head since he watched white men murder his father. Unable to hear the green music he needs to live well, Lolla-Wossiky depends upon alcohol to still the black noise—until he meets Alvin.

the narrator ruined this book for me, I just could not get into the story nor stay interested. She mumbled and ran her words together to the point where I missed at least 40% of the book.

I like everything about this including the voice acting. Unfortunately the sound quality was so poor that I thought I had a bad download. I downloaded it again(starlink wifi) and it was still poor.l

The story is outstanding. Truly enjoyed the series overall. Unfortunately trying to listen to the reader when it sounds muffled and coming from a far distance does not make for an enjoyable tale.

The story is very good, but the narrator is difficult to hear sometimes. She speaks very call Molly and quietly, which takes away from the story when you have to rewind it, and then turn the volume all the way up and still have difficulty making out what it said at times.

The concept of an alternate universe isn’t unique, but the idea of having our traditions of hexes and simple magic is genius.

Enjoyed all of this series.
