Publisher's summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of Enders Game comes a brand-new series following a teen who wakes up on an abandoned Earth to discover that he’s a clone!

Laz is a side-stepper: a teen with the incredible power to jump his consciousness to alternate versions of himself in parallel worlds. All his life, there was no mistake that a little side-stepping couldn’t fix.

Until Laz wakes up one day in a cloning facility on a seemingly abandoned Earth.

Laz finds himself surrounded by hundreds of other clones, all dead, and quickly realizes that he too must be a clone of his original self. Laz has no idea what happened to the world he remembers as vibrant and bustling only yesterday, and he struggles to survive in the barren wasteland he’s now trapped in. But the question that haunts him isn’t why was he created, but instead, who woke him up…and why?

There’s only a single bright spot in Laz’s new life: One other clone appears to still be alive, although she remains asleep. Deep down, Laz believes that this girl holds the key to the mysteries plaguing him, but if he wakes her up, she’ll be trapped in this hellscape with him.

This is one problem that Laz can’t just side-step his way out of.

Excellent Audiobook, great story.

I was hooked to the story from the get go. In fact, I had to restart the book a couple times during the first hour because I somehow really meshed with the abilities of the main character. This was a very engaging story, one which really jelled with me. I enjoyed the narrator as well. I've grown to really like him from the Ender books and his voice instantly gives me that dystopian genius character feeling.

Thank you for a great story!

My favourite author and one of the best narrators

Another great story from Orson Scott Card, he always keeps me enthrawled. This one is up there with his best. Loved it!

I didn't realise this was a trilogy, only a couple of questions where left hanging but it was not written in that deceptive way of so many authors where they leave you hanging to tease you into the next book. This book stands on its own and as a definate finish to it. The next book I am sure will be a new adventure and I'm looking forward to it.

Another great OSC book!

Loved it! Pretty much every Orson Scott Card book I read, leaves me feeling excited, invigorated and glad to be alive. I love how he is able to bring human emotions into every character. And how relatable the characters are.

Not much action

Fine story. Lots of time spent with characters contemplating lots of things, but not much in the way of action, or even in a satisfying conclusion. Good storytelling otherwise.

Great book

I've always loved the way Mr. Card has portrayed his characters. This book was no exception. The universe in the book is interesting and has lots of potential. I'm eagerly awaiting the second and third of this trilogy.

Loved it

So, I always get concerned with starting any series that isn't finished already, but fortunately, if there were no other books after this, then the story would be done enough. There are still a few open mysteries, but the overall main story this introduces has a good ending. I usually like most of OSC's books, minus a couple of the ending books to series that got strange. This book has an interesting concept that is known from the start of the book, but much of what is going on and why takes a while for that to be revealed. I hope the next book comes out soon.

Great storyline. Great narrator.

Orson Scott Card never fails to deliver. Another great story, thought experiment, and cast of characters.

Another Great O.S.C. Adventure

To me the style is that of classic Orson Scott Card. The voice of the protagonist is similar to that of many of his other books, but I personally love it and found the story interesting and engaging. The themes are also similar to ones he tackles in other books, but Wakers gives it a fresh spin with some fun unique mechanisms. A worthy read!

Dead End

Didn't like the way it ended. There should have been more to their story. The end was left wanting.
