About this listen

Frank Hinkle is thrilled when he is unexpectedly released from prison, but after a few days in his hometown, he's going to wish he had stayed safely behind bars. Things have changed in Rook Mountain, Tennessee, since Frank went away. His brother Jake has been missing for seven years, a fact no one bothered to share with Frank. His fun-loving buddy Will is now a somber man known for his violent enforcement of the town's bizarre new laws. Frank's sister-in-law Christine has a freezer chest containing a collection of illegal objects and a severed head. As Frank will soon learn, the only thing worse than being in Rook Mountain is being outside of it. Outside of town is where the Unfeathered sing their terrible song and wait for night to fall.

Caught by Surprise

I feel compelled to write a small narrative regarding this book. It's a unique book with some King characteristics. Crazy happenings that seem quite normal is the best way to describe it. I would have given 5 stars but the narration and the quality was less than perfect. I think this series could be one of the best if the author plays his cards right.

Interesting, if confusing at times.

Our protagonist Frank Hinkle is released early from prison on the condition that he help the authorities find his brother. Once back in his small home town of Rook Mountain, Tennessee Frank finds that things are quite different than he remembers. For one, there are many strange new regulations which the townsfolk strictly follow. Secondly, there are some very scary bird-like creatures patrolling the town borders preventing the people from leaving. There is much more going on, which leads to an interesting, if confusing at times mystery-thriller. This is the first book of a trilogy so be prepared for unresolved questions heading into book two. Three.point.five for a good start.

Interesting story of suspense & time manipulation

Any additional comments?

This is another great book by PT Hylton. It's a fun story of suspense and time manipulation, with well developed characters and a fun, modern sort of magic system (if you want to call the items that). Great read, and fun audiobook.

Fantastic Story!

I really enjoyed this one a lot. Hylton’s stories are like falling forward downhill. It’s hard to stop once you’ve started. Great Narration too. Mr Zonn did a fine job. Too bad he isn’t reading the next one.

Hey rare set of fresh ideas for the genre!

For those who enjoy high quality horror, time travel and nuanced near-future fantasy/science-fiction, it is difficult to find anything really new. I enjoy all these genres but only things that are high quality, really original, creative, and do not depend on sensationalism or Gore. This story is the first in these genres with really completely new ideas and surprises that I have come across in a long time. The whole idea of time is new, The monsters are completely original, and evil antagonist is also totally fresh for the genre (but not necessarily for real life – his closest analog has to be the typical politician). The closest parallel I can think of is to the work of the early Stephen King. I look forward to reading more from this author. Thus, I concur with the previous reviewer who said," Stop reading this review and just get the book!"

Horrible reader

I think the concept is good and the book would be interesting but the reader was so awful I just couldn't get into the story at all.

This narrator is the worst I've ever heard.

The story has its moments but it feels amateur. Honestly it may just be hampered by the terrible narrator...

Enjoyable story

I like supernatural type stories and this story was great. The only drawback was the narration. Mr Zonn has a Grandpa Walton type voice which was difficult to listen to with zoning out. Keep reminiscing on grandpa reading me a bedtime story.
