About this listen

Successful author Todd Klein and his wife Rosita live a quiet small town life. Todd's latest novel is selling well and despite recent budget cuts, Rosita relishes her job at the local library. After years of marriage, they're still in love, the mortgage to their suburban home is paid off, and their future is bright. Until, that is, Todd makes an appointment at the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew his license.

Jorge Guiterrez, Rosita's younger brother, hasn't been so lucky. A few months earlier, his bad temper finally caught up with him. After arguing with a supervisor, Jorge quit his cushy job and hasn't been able to find a new one. The bills are piling up and his wife is starting to pressure him. Until, one day, he is approached by a pair of mysterious strangers with an even more mysterious job offer...at the DMV.

Zal Tombasian, a young programmer at Data Initiatives, has a pretty boring existence. As his friend and co-worker Bernard tells him, "Your social life consists of sitting at home eating junk food and playing online games." Zal doesn't even bother to put up an argument. He's never been much for adventure. Until his company is hired to work on their largest account yet...by the DMV.

With his latest novel, Bentley Little's savage satire is on full display as he takes on everyone's worst nightmare, the DMV.

Stephen King says: "When it comes to horror, nobody does what Bentley Little does.... Scary, funny, weird, satiric, surreal."

"Longtime master of horror fiction Little is back. Readers will think twice about renewing their licenses after reading DMV. Fans of Little’s work will enjoy his latest offering." (Booklist)

"This is Bentley Little at his mind-blowing best." (Well Worth A Read)

More good work

Little sticks to his familiar storylines and what he does best. Only criticism is it could use some editing in the narration - one example is Jorge is pronounced Jorge sometimes and sometimes
George. Ha.

Just Okay

Probably my least favorite of BL’s books. I tried but I had just a hard time getting invested in the story line and characters. Had a hard time for first few chapters understanding which character was which. Time I got to the end, I really didn’t care much what happened, I was just ready to be done with it.
I usually really enjoy his books but this one missed the mark for me.

Slow start

I had the impression that the idea for this book was conceived from the author's experience with the actual DMV and just snowballed into a novel. It was very satyrical, but interesting and did have typical horror elements such as uncomfortable nudity, deformation, disfigurement, and a little sprinkling of gore.

Very Bentley Little

When I'm unsure what to listen to I chose a Bentley Little book. I like knowing there's a consistency in his writing. This title is a lot like his book, The University. There are some that stray from his typical design, like Gloria, but this is not an exception. I enjoyed this book, it was an interesting concept of government and power as well.

Awesome story and so close to true.

It's hard for me to find a good horror novel that keeps me interested or even scared. Little is an amazing author. His ability to take very simple things that we deal with in everyday life, like the DMV, and turn it into a horror story is beyond words. There's not one person in this world with a driver's license or who has registered a car that hasn't had an issue with the DMV. Even if it was just having to stand in line too long. For him to take the DMV and turn it into what he has created here, is not only interesting, but also horrifying. Yes, something like this couldn't really happen, or could it? This book really makes you think. The narrator was great. He brought the characters to life in such a way that you became invested quickly. And despite the different storylines in the beginning, the way Little brings all the characters together is spot on and timely. Some authors have so many characters, and weave so many individual storylines into a book, that at some point you start to lose track of people. This does not happen with Bentley Little. Little is brilliant! You will not be disappointed with this book!

Get a clue!

I have to laugh at the negative reviews about politics! Little does not really take a stand but describes a dystopian authoritarian religious/fascist cult. Too real for you? Be afraid- very very afraid- ALL HAIL! Keep ‘em coming BL the horror is very real

A little awkward.

I absolutely love Bentley Little's warped delusions but this one was a little awkward. It is to expect that it's not going to be realistic but it was hard for me to stay intrigued. Still, I did listen to the end and I was happy that I did.

All Hail The DMV!

I decided to read this in advance of my own trip to the DMV next week. All I can say is WOW. We all hate going to the DMV and after reading this, I really don't want to go. Excellent idea for a story. Just more reason to hate the DMV!

Always knew the DMV was evil

Good story but needs to keep politics out of the story as it does not add any value. Readers read fiction to escape into a story and away from the real world.

Fun and probably truer than it’s meant to be!

Bentley does it again with DMV. I was so happy to see that he’d written a new book and this did not disappoint.. all of the feelings from icky to scary, to awkward, to giggles - this book has it excellent story, and great narration. Bravo!
