About this listen

Catfight in Black and White

Teacher and Fran arrive at the Beastman Nation to find the fabled Black Cat who trained Rigdith, but their quest is interrupted by a run-in with some monsters! Fran easily dispatches them, but those monsters were being pursued by a strange, white-haired cat girl. She's outraged that Fran swiped her quarry, outraged enough to challenge Fran to a duel! Can Fran and Teacher resolve this without bloodshed, or is the fur about to fly?

This series is fantastic but every now and then something small happens that is hard to look past. Like Teacher absolutely destroying enemies one moment, and the next has Fran getting horribly maimed by enemies of a similar level.

Let Fran shine more often in combat so I don't question why she's there in the first place rather then just letting teacher solo the universe.

Fun with some small issues

once I started it I could not stop. Great undercat adventure. I recommend this entire series.

worth it

Fran is in the beast kingdom and... I know this is shocking... she fights stuff. Lots of stuff.

the book sets up that the black cat tribe can not evolve past level 45. most enemies and adventurers Fran meets are around level 40 and 30. which means the tribe can not become very powerfull, but it can be at least adequate.

so of course the village is protected by guards that were never able to kill a single goblin around the level 15... this story is asinine. the author sets up rules and a world and completely ignores the. when it suits him, this means nothing matters beyond what is currently described, since any preestablished worldbulding can change on the whim of the author.

excelent example would be something like apothecary diaries where preestablished lore of the universe is so tied to the story, that entire plot points are based around what the narrative explained was part of the lore.

but this series sets up a lore point, it establishes the rough strength of a certain level, but because the author desperately needs the black cats to come as weak as possible, he forces the inhabitants to be morons. because that is the only way he can think of, to force them to not be tied to the lore he himself established.i am not an author but I can think of such an easy solution to it myself, make them freed slaves that are free only a short while, bam, that explains their lack of experience and why they are so meak and follows established worldbuilding

. also the weak writing goes from the point of tardiness to re-tardiness.... for example, Fran needs enemies to show the cats some lessons, they instantly pop up. fran needs to meat the princess of the beast tribe, she pops up immediately. Fran accidentally on her voyage through the sea meets not only the the same villain from the country she already met, so that the author can show her growth as a adventurer, but also the same monster that she already met to show off her power level on clear comparison. the story sets up godlike monsters and right in the next chapter one shows up. this is so pathetic

Exagerated to the point of idiocy.
