Publisher's summary

An immigrant’s mysterious death sets off a chilling hunt for the truth in this gripping crime novel from the author of Missing, Presumed

“Brilliantly gripping.” (Lucy Foley, author of The Guest List)

“A police procedural with real imagination and heart, and a marvelous lightness of style and wit.” (Philip Pullman, author of His Dark Materials trilogy)

Named One of the Best Books of the Year by the Guardian

Newly married and navigating life with a preschooler as well as her adopted adolescent son, Manon Bradshaw is happy to be working part-time in the cold-cases department of the Cambridgeshire police force, a job that allows her to potter in, coffee in hand, and log on for a spot of internet shopping - precisely what she had in mind when she thought of work-life balance. But beneath the surface Manon is struggling with the day-to-day realities of what she’d assumed would be domestic bliss: fights about whose turn it is to clean the kitchen, the bewildering fatigue of having a young child while in her 40s, and the fact that she is going to couples counseling alone because her husband feels it would just be her complaining.

But when Manon is on a walk with her four-year-old son in a peaceful suburban neighborhood and discovers the body of a Lithuanian immigrant hanging from a tree with a mysterious note attached, she knows her life is about to change. Suddenly, she is back on the job full-force, trying to solve the suicide - or is it a murder - in what may be the most dangerous and demanding case of her life.

And I long for the next one. Please, Susie! Give us more Manon!
Great narration, too.

Outstanding!

May be the best of the three Manon Bradshaw novels but they were all good. Sad to think of the author’s passing.

so sad series is over and about the author's death

I loved Manon. I loved her acerbic, keen wit, honesty and humor- laughed out loud so many times listening to these books. I cried some during this one having read about Ms. Steiner's terrible illness and untimely death. This book had an understandable darkness to the themes that made it difficult sometimes. The humanity of the characters was really uplifting. Brilliant author, brilliant writing! The reader was one of the best I have ever heard...perfect inflections perfect accents perfect different voices for each character!!!

Susie Steiner is pithy, witty, literary, charming, and captivating writing keeps drawing me in

The plot of this one was less interesting to me than the previous two; however, I can’t stop reading Ms. Steiner’s prose.
I love the multitude of sub plots, the incredibly honest exclamations of Manon Bradshaw, And the creative use of language.
The Lithuanian story was a little less interesting to me, but I’m still glad I read the book.
Frankly, I probably read anything Susie Steiner wrote, even her annotated grocery list.

Loved listening to this

This was my favorite Manon Bradshaw book. I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much if I read it vs listened to Juanita’s performance of it. I can’t wait for the next one. Manon is flawed but she’d still be one of my BFFs. I totally get her!

Clear-eyed view of humanity

Great character development, woven into the police procedural narrative. Wish there were more in the series. The characters feel so real and relatable.

Richly rewarding

It terrible that Ms Steiner has died. Each book got stronger, characters more complex, with deeper internal lives, and each mystery was complex, and NOT telegraphed before you finished. Excellent series, very glad I listened.

Manon struggles

This book is different. She's struggling with middle age, managing all of the responsibilities once she once again is working a recent murder. There is quite a bit of the many social consequences of immigration to the immigrant and to the locals which I appreciated. It's not as exciting as the first 2, but a solid, well written book.

I just discovered this writer and I'll have read these three books with the most hilarious and poignant character man on. I absolutely encourage anyone to give her a try
