Publisher's summary

Some girls grow up watching cartoons of princesses and unicorns. Some girls grow up wearing pretty dresses and dreaming about meeting a nice boy. Some are even tomboys, taking more active roles in sports or getting their hands dirty with the boys.

Kaitlyn Olhouser didn't have any of those options. She was a long-term experiment that resulted in becoming an empath. She was rescued by her adopted family, a team of people each gifted with psychic powers that calls itself Oneiros. She has abilities just like them. She's even more powerful than all but one of them, but she's 16, and her caretakers seem more interested in making sure she graduates high school that letting her use her abilities to join the team.

A short encounter with some bullies inspires her to find her own opportunity to be the hero she knows she's destined to be. But being a hero isn't exactly what comic books make it out to be. Her actions put an Oneiros mission in danger, and her antics in school create more problems than she could imagine.

Kaitlyn must embrace what it is to be a hero to make a real difference, not in the war against bad guys, but in the lives of her friends.

Great quick listen

Kaitlyn has a bit of growing up to do and she’s trying to do it quickly. She’s smart and a bit cocky. Your typical teenager. I loved her and her family. I would definitely be interested in more stories based in this universe.
Narration by Jennifer Wooster was perfect.

Hooked on this author!

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Ok Weech, you got me. I am yours. This was a shorter book but the third that I have listened to by this author and I am now setting up an amazon alert for this author. You have won my heart.

I may be older (I will not state my age because it is embarrassing) but I do love me some YA. This was written slightly different to the previous book, Caught, because it was geared towards a different audience but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I do wonder if the author is going to have 2 different types of books for this series: YA and adult? Either way, I will definitely be reading all there is to come.

Not my cup of tea

Don't get me wrong, objectively there's nothing wrong with this novella.

A well written young adult coming of age story, centered around current affairs, about a super powered teenage girl, her nearly polygomus super powered family and the beauty of diversity and tolerance.

The only real issue that I have with this novella is that it's miles and miles away from it's very adult orientated predecessor, Caught. Right down to it's first person perspective presentation.

If you've never read Caught you may well like this story, provided you like young adult fare. There are a few aspects of logic with the plot that you may question. And you may scratch your head a little at some of the references from the first book and just exactly what Kaitlyn's modern family is doing, but Weech does a fair job of trying to give new readers just enough information to allow this story to almost work as a stand alone.

If you've read Caught, and I'll assume you liked it or else you wouldn't be here, then I'd recommend you take a pass on this one. Aside from character growth for Kaitlyn (unless you're a big Kaitlyn fan) there's nothing else in this story that you'll need to know. I'd just wait for the true sequel. Something that I'm excited for.

I applaud Weech for experimenting with different genres and different writing styles, but this mixture of genres just didn't personally work for me.

The narration by Jennifer Wooster fit well with the tone of the story. She did a fantastic job of relaying the emotions of the varying characters. I'd gladly listen to anything that she narrates in the future.
