About this listen

Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. If vampires kill your entire family, vengeance is a must.

I can't say my parents never warned me about vampires. I just never believed them. Not - that is - until six months ago when vampires broke into my home and killed my family. Thanks to all the skills my parents taught me, I managed to escape but I couldn't save them.

Two vampires down and the rest of the world to go.

My bid for revenge is going to have to wait, though, because until I turn 18, I'm being placed in the loving care of Elizabeth and Jonathan McKnight - godparents I didn't even know existed. The clock is ticking until I can get back to my goal of eradicating the vampire race. But something is amiss at my new high school.

According to my parents, vampires can't walk in daylight. So, why then, does Torin Priest? If he's not a vampire, then what is he? Because unlike the obnoxious asshole, Maverick McKnight, who sees me as some sort of bloodsucking leech on his wealthy family, Torin Priest is most certainly not human.

To stake or not to stake, that is the question.

Great premise, good story

I really enjoyed this story. Barbie seems a bit static, even for someone with trauma, though. Torino and Maverick have great character development, though!

I have a new series to obsess over🖤🖤🖤

It's like Buffy with more spice & F bombs🌶💣
I don't know if I love Torin or Maverick more but I'm hoping it's a why choose cause I don't wanna‼
The ending definitely let me know the Spice & Barbie's supernatural abilities will be ramping up in book 2...so I'm diving in Immediately💯✌

No Vampire Hunter

Rest in Pieces by Lucinda Dark is the first book in the Barbie: the Vampire Hunter series and just because of the obvious name similarity to Buffy the Vampire Slayer I had some really high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it missed the mark for me, but we’ll touch on why later.

Barbie was recently orphaned when her family was killed by a set of vampires. No worries she killed them back, but now she is in the foster care system and has gone to live with her wealthy godparents. They are nice people who are glad to have her even if their son, Maverick, isn’t. Add to that the strange boy she had instant chemistry with at the rich school she is now attending and bam love triangle potential is everywhere. It appears she has landed a little closer to her new vampire nemesis than she realizes and there is danger afoot everywhere.

Sounds like some solid potential, right? Plot possibilities are there but it was missing the fun banter dialogue that Buffy had, which would not be that terrible, but Barbie can come off kind of mean and let’s face it bitchy at times. Also, none of the other characters in the book seem to have any imagination and she is called a bitch by around four different characters. Also, if you’ve read any of my reviews you might know I’m not a huge fan of love triangles. It is a rare occasion that any of them go well for me and mostly it is a ploy to kick up some emotional drama. It can be done right, but for me that is the exception not the rule.

Last but not least is that this book couldn’t seem to decide what it wanted to be. Is it YA? Is it NA? Is it adult PNR? Even now I can’t tell you. It is written like it is for Young Adults set in a high school with the big showdown during prom. But then there was talk of heat in my core and I just wanted to stick my cock in her, so definitely not YA in my eyes. I might have done better in a college setting if we are throwing stuff like that into the book.

A little more focus on the plot and a little less on the love triangle and I think I would have enjoyed it more. I would call this a mash up of Buffy + Mean Girls + Twillight. If that is your jam, then this might be a better read for you.

Narration:
Kevin T. Collins and Heather Costa do a great job on narration and I always like having different narrators for dual or triple PoV narrations. I think it adds a lot to the story. I listened at my normal 1.5x speed.
