About this listen
Profoundly deaf since early childhood, Caleb has always lived on the outside - watching and picking up tell-tale signs people hide in a smile, a cough or a kiss. When a childhood friend is murdered, a sense of guilt and a determination to prove his own innocence sends Caleb on a hunt for the killer. But he can’t do it alone....

Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Story
Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate. I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
Juliet only wanted to see her childhood home one more time–to look at it from the street. She never intended to meet the new owners, let alone talk her way into a position as their new live-in nanny. But it's too late now to tell the truth about who she really is. Six-year-old Kitty has progressive mutism and cannot speak. Nobody knows why she keeps making silent phone calls to the police. Juliet makes it her mission to find out. As Juliet settles into the house, nostalgia for her childhood gives way to uneasiness, as troubling memories surface.

Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Good Until the Last Scene
The story is good but the last action scene is drawn out and contrived, which is made more frustrating by the fact that the rest of the story hangs together pretty well. Also, an author who wants to write crime novels should learn more about guns and how to handle them.

Excellent book and great 1st book
Series would be great for this defective detective. Interest held throughout. Surprise ending and thoroughly suspenseful page by page. Absorbing with real life characters with all life's problems. I enjoyed every minute listening to the wonderful narration. You can't go wrong getting this book. 5 stars all the way. Mike Dunn

Exciting mystery
Exciting and intense at times, with interesting, complex characters. I figured out some of this complex mystery, but not all of it. There was plenty of “who do I trust, who don’t I” to keep me doubting almost everyone.
The audiobook was solidly narrated. The reader has a good voice, though not all of his voices were distinguishable from each other, which at times caused me a little confusion over who was saying what. The audio didn’t do much to enhance the book, but it didn’t hurt it either. I wouldn’t mind listening to the next one, but I’d be happy reading it in print too.

Well-plotted mystery!
Well plotted, interesting characters, good length. I really enjoyed the authors creative descriptions. Some were so good that I stopped to write them down to re-read later. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. The one problem I had: The narrator's accent took getting used to. At first I struggled to understand him.

Irksome convo
I became increasingly bothered by the efforts of the deaf protagonist to understand and be understood by others. The repetition made for choppy flow, slowed the story, and caused me to be annoyed with, not sympathetic to, the main character. The author had an interesting idea, but I think it is difficult to execute well. Don’t recommend.
