Publisher's summary
Coming home dredges up deeply buried secrets in The Survivors, a thrilling mystery by New York Times best-selling author Jane Harper.
Kieran Elliott's life changed forever on the day a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences.
The guilt that still haunts him resurfaces during a visit with his young family to the small coastal community he once called home.
Kieran's parents are struggling in a town where fortunes are forged by the sea. Between them all is his absent brother, Finn.
When a body is discovered on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge. A sunken wreck, a missing girl, and questions that have never washed away....
A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books
"[Harper is] a master at creating atmospheric settings, and it’s easy to fall under her spell.... A layered and nuanced mystery.” (Kirkus)
“As always, Harper skillfully evokes the landscape as she weaves a complicated, elegant web, full of long-buried secrets ready to come to light.” (New York Times Book Review)

Homicide detective Frank Bennett has a new partner - dark, beautiful, coldly efficient Eden Archer. Frank doesn’t know what to make of her, or her brother Eric, who’s also on the police force. Their methods are... unusual. But when a graveyard full of large steel toolboxes filled with body parts is found at the bottom of Sydney harbor, unusual is the least of their worries. For Eden and Eric, the case holds chilling links to a scarred childhood - and the murderer who raised them. For Frank, each clue brings him closer to something he’s not sure he wants to face.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Two couples, four ironclad friendships, the perfect coastal holiday town. With salt-stung houses perched like lifeguards overlooking the shore, Lago Point is the scene of postcards, not crime scenes. Wife and mother Abbi, town cop Blake, schoolteacher Hannah and local doctor Will are caught in their own tangled webs of deceit.

It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

When the body of reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her twenty-fifth birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. A tragedy, certainly, but not a crime. Yet Columbia grad student Lena—principled, headstrong, and allergic to the spotlight—knows that can’t be the case. Despite the bitter truth that the two hadn’t spoken in two years, they were half-sisters. Lena knew Desiree. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. Something is very wrong with the facts. This author has become one of my favorites. And Stephen Shanahan narration is amazing...again. This book was just released yesterday and already, I can’t wait for the next one. I have listened to the previous 3 books twice, and I will be listening to this one again.

Best Psychological Thriller in past year
The isolated Tasmania coast community was rocked by a tragic storm 12 years earlier. Now grief and guilt from those events boil over setting family against family and friend against friend. The Survivors started more slowly than previous books by Jane Harper. But as I got through it I realized this gave her the time to peel back the layers of the characters more dramatically. This built to one of her most riveting endings yet and made it all worthwhile.

Amazing Storytelling
Ever listened to a book that was so good that you don’t even want to start another because it couldn’t possibly be as good? That’s where I am right now.
I’ve read most of Harper’s books but this is the first audiobook of hers that I’ve listened to. I was quickly and completely absorbed in the story. Shanahan’s narration was wonderful. Such an excellent delivery without the odd character voice changes that many authors make narrators do. 5 stars across the board.

Another 5 Star
What makes Harper’s books so incredible is the atmosphere. I’m not one for long scenery descriptions that disrupt a books flow. But the environment is another character and getting to know it intimately is what makes these thrillers. The Dry is still my favorite, because it’s so sinister. But this one has beautiful themes of hope and redemption that I loved. Stephen Shanahan is incomparable.

So much talking, not too much action. I struggled to finish the book, it was boring and everyone in the story kept talking but never talking about anything that was part of the "mystery". The narrator had parts where it was incredibly hard to hear while others were very loud.

Great Atmosphere and Characters
I have thoroughly enjoyed Jane Harper’s other books and was not disappointed with the Survivors. The main character is a “good guy” with a personal family tragedy. The tragedy of the past unfolds on the telling of a present day murder and the two events become more entwined. I was a bit confused at points when I was listening whether the story was present tense of past tense but it got easier to follow the time shifts as the story unraveled. The scenery was vivid - great narration- and the title of the book says everything about the story. I kept trying to guess the ending and was wrong every time. A five star listen!
