About this listen

Rilla is full of high-spirits just like her mother. But undreamed-of challenges await the irrepressible girl when the world of Ingleside becomes endangered by a far-off war, which carries off her brothers and many of the local young men to fight overseas.

The eighth of nine books in the Anne Shirley series, Rilla of Ingleside was published in 1921 and was the sixth book to feature the beloved protagonist from Anne of Green Gables. Notable for being the only Canadian novel about WWI written from a woman's perspective, it is also unique in that it mentions the Gallipoli campaign and the terrible sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand forces.

Narrator-Karen Savage

This narrator is good. My all favorite is Karen Savage. I wish she'd just do the others she didnt do. I think AGG, AWP and this one are my favotites.

I am very much in love with these people in these books. Mrs. Montgomery had a true gift and I’m so thankful for it!

Perfectly understated performance.

I loved this version of Rilla. I've found so many readings of the Anne books over-dramatic to the point of caricature. This one was very simply read with just the right emotion. Thank you!

love LMMontgomery!

Rilla is a great character: smart, plucky, independent. This differs from the earlier Anne books in that it's kind of a grim historical setting, against the backdrop of the first World War. More 'Rah Rah Patriotism' than I personally prefer, and much more optimistic about the future, in 1918, than turned out to be realistic 100 years later, but a really interesting viewpoint of the things our grandparents and great-grandparentz went through that helped in shaping the personality of Eastern North America in the last century. Well worth a thoughtful listen, and charmingly entertaining to boot!

The narration was ok. A little bland, with a tendancy to put the stress in each sentance the exact same way, phrase after phrase, and no differentiation between the many characters at ALL, unless the speaker was written in dialect in the text. But a pleasant, sufficiently accurate read, and, as stated, worth the listen! Well done!

beautiful story, beautiful narration

This is a beautiful ending to the Anne of Green Gables series. It is a tear-jerker though, so be prepared. I love Kate Handford's narration, she has a young, pretty voice that just suits Rilla, in my opinion. Some of the other samples I listened to were read by older women and I felt they didn't represent the heroine very well.

Perfect narration and a perfectly heart wrenching story!

This story has so many lovely, tragic, soul-searing moments. My heart is both broken and full.

I laughed and cried. I am grateful for the history I learned from the book. It was meaningful and important. Also, the narrator is fantastic. Thank you!
