Publisher's summary

J. P. Beaumont may be an old homicide hand now, but back when he was a rookie working with his first partner, Milton Gurkey - a.k.a. Pickles - things took a turn for the worse . . .

One day, at the end of Beaumont and Pickles's shift, a stop at the Doghouse restaurant quickly turns deadly. Not feeling well, Pickles steps out into the parking lot for a breath of fresh air and stumbles into a crime in progress. Suffering from a heart attack, he is found unconscious, with a dead woman on the ground nearby and the murder weapon in his hand.

With Pickles under investigation from Internal Affairs, it's up to the new kid on the block, J. P. Beaumont, and his friends on the force to find out the truth.

Fantastic short story

As a tidbit of backstory to the early years of J P Beaumont this story is brilliantly done. Well written, with a warm, tight narrative and brilliantly read by Horne. Everything just flows so well you hate when it's over.

Great story. Especially because we knew "Pickles"

As avid readers and listeners to J. P. Beaumont's cases "Pickles" was a known character. And now to paraphrase Paul Harvey ..... "We know the rest of the story". a great rainy day treat.

Misplaced

I reviewed this title out of sequence. It was too short and more like an afterthought or a supplement to a previous title.

It was hard to distinguish which character was talking

Felt like it was incomplete for the story.
Couldn’t tell Pickles dialogue from Beaumont most of the time. 😕
