About this listen

For Sheriff Joanna Brady and her 12-year-old daughter Jenny, an innocent Girl Scout campout turns into a lethal game when Jenny and her tentmate, Dora Matthews, discover a murdered Phoenix woman.

Back at home, Joanna's main concern is helping her daughter recover from this terrible trauma, even as she attends to the demands of a new marriage and a possible reelection campaign. But then Dora turns up dead, and instantly Joanna's concern turns to terror. For if the killer is murdering potential witnesses, Sheriff Brady's beloved daughter may be next.

Critic reviews

"Jance's sense of place remains strong, whether here in the beautifully rendered rural Arizona setting or in the rainy Seattle of her J.P. Beaumont mysteries." (Publishers Weekly)

The story is good as all hers are.
But the music between parts was jarring and unpleasant.

Love the story, hate the music.

I have now read several of the Joanna Brady series, and the author continues to evolve the character nicely. I especially enjoyed the two story-lines and how she wove them together. A good story, with excellent narration and a thoroughly believable working woman main character make this a great listen.

Enjoyable

Why in the heck can't you have all of JAJance's books unabridged on Audible???? We have to pay full price, so why can't you give us the full books?

Unabridged is so much better!

I could have done with the musical interludes between chapters. Did not enjoy at all and was entirely off-putting.

Musical interludes

I did not care for the "elevator music" between chapters, as opposed to simple Chapter Number Announcements. I like knowing what Chapter that I am hearing , as I listen most often at night and have been know to drift off to sleep despite a strong desire to listen. Knowing what chapter I last remember helps me discover where I should be in the story line, upon awakening. Is that about as clear as mud? Yeah? Okay then!

Music between chapters:

For the most part the narrator pronounced the place names somewhat correctly but i wish ,d ask.

The reader was boring and one dimensional. The music added no value to the reading and was annoying.

Yucky music

My husband and I truly like hearing about Joanna and her family, at home and at work. This was unavailable in the unabridged version. While we got the story, we missed the details.

Better Unabridged

I really like this book. The reader was clear, and the delivery was excellent. What I did not like, was the music that changed during each chapter! Unnecessary and out of place.

Short and eh
