About this listen
From the multi-award-winning master of crime, Denise Mina delivers a radical new take on one of the darkest episodes in Scottish history - the bloody assassination of David Rizzio, private secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots, in the queen's chambers in Holyrood Palace.
On the evening of March 9, 1566, David Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, was brutally murdered. Dragged from the chamber of the heavily pregnant Mary, Rizzio was stabbed 56 times by a party of assassins. This breathtakingly tense novella dramatizes the events that led up to that night, telling the infamous story as it has never been told before.
A dark tale of sex, secrets, and lies, Rizzio looks at a shocking historical murder through a modern lens - and explores the lengths that men and women will go to in their search for love and power.
Rizzio is nothing less than a provocative and thrilling new literary masterpiece.

It is 1502, and Rodrigo Borgia, a self-confessed womanizer and master of political corruption, is now on the papal throne as Alexander VI. His daughter Lucrezia, age 22 - already three times married and a pawn in her father's plans - is discovering her own power. And then there is his son Cesare Borgia, brilliant, ruthless, and increasingly unstable; it is his relationship with Machiavelli that gives the Florentine diplomat a master class in the dark arts of power and politics.

Interesting and charming
Lovely historical novella dramatizing real events. Makes me interested in the history of the period, and as always, Denise Mina has an incredibly deft touch in making the nuances of momentary emotions feel exciting.

Fantastic listen
From the very beginning of this short book I was sucked in, entranced by her descriptions of the character’s appearances and actions. The author has an amazing talent for creating atmosphere. I have read many books about this event but this is the best by far. Very much looking forward to her future work in this genre!

A true story told in a narrative that is so well done
This is the true story of the murder of Rizzio, who was the favorite of Queen Mary of Scots. Brilliantly told and read. It covers the events of just 48 hours.

Another Denise Mina memorable story
I enjoyed this take on the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, showing the complexities of palace intrigue with the drama and feelings of the participants in full view. The reading was very compelling too.

STELLAR
I CANNOT WAIT for the next of these novellas in what the author said is going to be a series. I found about this book on the Not Just The Tudors podcast and I bless the day I did-I may have found a new author to love!
This book offers a snapshot on a brief but powerfully monumental moment in time. Mina takes you directly to the room and you feel like an observer off in the corner. He stunningingly realistic portrayal of characters is amazing. I can’t say enough good things about this novella-my only wish is that it was longer!

I didn’t want it to end….
Very much enjoyed this story…Loved how it gave background to other people in the murder of David Rizzio and what their roles were to Queen Mary. I only wish the story was a bit longer.

Brilliant novella
Written as tautly as any thriller, it takes us into an historical set of events with imagination, pathos, and vibrancy.

Over before it began
If I had seen that it was only 2 hours, I would not have wasted a credit. I was just getting into it and it ended. Very disappointing.
