About this listen

Sheriff Roan Benedict comes from a family of hardheaded men who have a habit of rescuing, and falling for, equally hardheaded women. And sure enough, he's falling for a woman he just shot.

This mysterious stranger just helped rob a convenience store. But that doesn't explain the bruises on her jaw and rope burns on her wrist. Though intrigued, Roan is suspicious of her claim that she doesn't remember what happened. Two things are clear to Roan. One: She's lying. Two: Someone is trying to kill her.

There's only one place safe enough for a lady in danger: right by his side. Because in Louisiana, a man holds on to what he wants.

"A love story that is pure and enjoyable." (Romantic Times)

I enjoyed this book, as it is part of Jennifer Blake's "Gentleman Series." It was familiar, as several of the characters I knew from previous books - Clay and Kane. It's ok if you haven't read those, but I'm glad I had.

Roan is a southern gentleman and as such, always knows what's "best" for you. This is the theme throughout the book. The story was interesting, with a little suspense and southern romance. I liked it.

Sometimes, I like romances where the big strong lawman knows how to protect a fiery, but ultimately vulnerable woman. Maybe it’s not PC or modern enough... but I liked this book when I read it in the nineties and listening brought back good vibes. After reading, and then listening to, the unabridged version of the books in this series (Kane and Clay), I’m happy this one was abridged. I’d have been happier with another narrator, maybe even a male narrator like Shane East or Paul West.

I like Jennifer Blake, but this story just didn't do it for me. I felt little interest in the lead male character.
