Publisher's summary

The past is never over. It just gets dusty.

Lisa Grant was a rising star in a prestigious law firm in Lexington, Kentucky, when the firm went bankrupt and she lost her job. With an ailing mother to care for, she takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. Scott is as disagreeable as he is sexy, and Lisa suspects the only reason she got the job was Scott’s fond feelings for her mother, who treated him well when he was just a farmhand on the Grants’ large horse farm while Lisa was growing up.

After she misses an important court date, Lisa doesn’t get any special treatment from Scott. As punishment, he sends her to organize cold-case files in the basement of the courthouse. What Lisa expects to be a mind-numbingly boring task turns into anything but when a missing-persons case draws her attention. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family — father, mother, and two children — disappeared without a trace more than 28 years ago. Except that’s not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin.

Before Lisa can learn more, a series of catastrophes strikes close to home, and she realizes that finding the photo has put her in terrible danger. Determined to uncover the truth, she confides in Scott, and their relationship develops into something beyond that of employer and employee. Together they unravel a terrifying web of criminal connections that could shatter what Lisa knows of her past. And it’s clear someone will go to shocking lengths to make sure certain secrets stay hidden.

Okay plot but....

Fairly decent plot read ably by Susan Ericksen. However, three chapters of unending sex - seriously????? It's as though author ran out of plot, deciding to fill pages with mindless sex. Disappointing and totally unnecessary. Won't listen to another Robards novel

Great listen!! Totally enjoyed this one.

This story pulled me in right from the start. Even though the story/mystery kind of went in fits and starts - the characters were really interesting and I enjoyed it very much. I highly recommend this one!

Really enjoyed the story and the narrator

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I found the 'mystery' predictable. However, I would happily listen to it again and I'm looking forward to other books by Karen Robards. I always enjoy Susan Erickson's narration.

Fiery, & Intense thrill ride from Karen Robards!!!

From the very start your caught up in the intrigue over Lisa's true identity. As the stakes get higher & hotter, you find yourself trying to find the real master mind behind all the mayhem!!! Our heroine has to uncover the killers face, find the truth, and hopefully keep herself and her mother alive!!! Plus... figure out what is evolving between her and her boss! EXCELLENT READ!!!

Pretty Short Story

Where does Shattered rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

At the bottom.

Would you recommend Shattered to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably not. The story was very simple.

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her narrating was really good.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The outcome had no deep impact.

Any additional comments?

It didn't matter how it ended, I just wanted it to end.

Far too Long

Way, way way too long. Plot ok, but story could have been presented in1/3-1/2 as much time. Extraneous, boring detail. Also very predictable. Won’t read this author again. Should have paid more attention to reviews.

Highly addictive

Wow, I downloaded this book a long time ago and finally got around to listening to it. Should have done it sooner. What an addictive listen! My ears are sore. The way it starts out, I think I will get bored with it, and figure it out easily, but that doesn't happen. A dozen scenarios went through my head, as to who murdered the family, and are a couple of them still living. There are suspects galore, with a romance blooming in the middle of it all. It's an entertaining mystery, that doesn't disappoint.

My Thoughts

Oh my gosh !!! I loved loved loved this book!!
I loved how Scott's and Lisa's relationship bloomed, I loved the support she received from her friends when she hit a emotional crisis.
But as the story of the Garcias disappearance started to come out and her true identity I got chills!! This book is a great read.

Totally recommend it!

The mystery was top notch - I had just a vague a idea of what's going on - and didn't figure out the villains and their motives until they were unmasked. The romance was scorching - one of those where the leads have had the hots for each other for years - and there was an incredible chemistry between them. They knew each other really well and were a very well matched couple, who gave as good as they got. My only complaint is that once they got together, the romance became really secondary - in fact, Scott, became somewhat secondary - we barely saw him dealing with his own issues (namely his family) again. Oh, and how many times can somebody get knocked in the head without having head trauma?

The narration by Ericksen was ok. Her male voices were really sub-par, which is a shame because Scott seemed too hot for words. This would have been scorching with a good male narrator.
