Publisher's summary

In this riveting, “gory, and action-packed” (Jonathan Maberry) survival thriller, set in the expansive world of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead series, three people from different walks of life in China must join forces against the typhoon of undead as chaos sweeps over Asia.

In the aftermath of the zombie virus outbreak, what remains of the Chinese government has estimated that one billion walkers (called jiangshi) are currently roaming through the country. Across this dramatic landscape, large groups of survivors have clustered together for safety in villages and towns that have been built vertically as a means of protection against the unceasing wave of jiangshi.

In one of these settlements, scavengers of vastly different backgrounds struggle to provide supplies for the survival of thousands. Before this devastation, Zhu was one of millions of poor farmers who left their rural roots for the promise of consistent employment in one of China’s booming factory towns. Ella was a Chinese American grad student who was studying abroad for the semester. Hengyen was a grizzled military officer of some renown and a passionate believer in his nation’s ability to surmount any obstacle.

Zhu, as the leader of the team Ella is a part of, reports to Hengyen. But with the settlement’s 5,000 mouths to feed and the scavengers having to travel further and further in search of food, Zhu ends up at his home village, where he is shocked to find survivors. Does he force them to join the settlement or keep their existence a secret?

Meanwhile, Hengyen is tasked with the impossible: fortifying the Beacon against a 100,000-strong “typhoon” of walkers header their way. Even though he realizes that the Beacon hardly stands a chance, Hengyen is a believer and will stand with his compatriots to the very last, bringing him into conflict with Zhu, who intends to flee the path of the typhoon and make for the safety of China’s dramatic mountain ranges before it’s too late.

Given “two decaying thumbs up,” (Jonathan Mayberry, author of Rot & Ruin), this book is sure to get your heart racing and leave you wanting more!

Love it. Change of pace from gun heavy zombie stuf

I liked the focus on a society where guns aren't as common place as they are in many USA zombie settings. More stuff like this would be good!!

Had to take a break halfway through as I was kinda burnt out from zombies. Came back and loved most of the book!

The setting in China was a great idea. Melee focused combat was good. Voice actor was great and gave different voices for characters. Story reached a pretty decent ending.

I had difficulty with the Chinese names, references to geography, and fully understanding there mindset. I was putting my perspective as a USA citizen on the story when these characters live in a very different environment and government. Understanding this made the story much better for me.

One thing I did hate was the trope of "miscommunication" or "no communication". I hate how that trope drove the plot and felt they could have gotten to the end game in a different and better way. This trope made me really dislike one of the main characters which I really enjoyed.

Other than that, if you like zombies, give this a shot!

first book in the series I've read..

and I really enjoyed this! I'm so glad they are expanding on the WD world. This story, completely original, really stands up against his other work. I really look forward to more books outside the main comic storyline.

interesting additional to the WDU

Been a fan of Wesley Chu since I read his first the Two series a couple years back. Since then, he's continued to expand the Quasing universe and introduced us into time tracker scavenging. so when I saw he wrote a book base in the WD universe, I knew I had to get it.

Overall, I think this was a solid addition to the series, filled with vivid characters and an interesting geographical location. Like all of the previous books I've read in Chu's collection, once I started this one, I didn't want to put it down. I wouldn't mind a few more books from him in this universe, but please let the Living Revolution stay dead.

Hope to see it on screen one day. More stories from around the world in this universe should be done.

A welcome escape back to my favorite world

I listened to this book over three or four days. I love that it was the mythos Robert Cartman set up at its foundation, so understanding what could and couldn't be done about the walkers was already ingrained. Knowing what little I do about China as a government, and maybe a little more about the high value of loyalty it's people hold, built a really interesting setting for the story. The American student from Texas really brought the world's together.

I enjoyed the narration, and I enjoyed that the Chinese words were spoken authentically, and the English spoken by the Chinese people also sounded authentic. The narrator even managed to get some true Texan out of that character.

I'll be looking for more titles that take place in this world I already feel at home in!
