About this listen

Robert Ludlum's best-selling Covert-One series continues with an exciting new novel by New York Times best-selling author Kyle Mills.

An attack on a Japanese warship brings Japan and China to the brink of war. Meanwhile, top Covert-One operative Colonel Jon Smith is sent on a mission to recover mysterious material from the wreckage of the Fukushima nuclear reactor. When Smith fails to return, CIA agent Randi Russell heads off on an unsanctioned mission to find him. She quickly discovers that the missing samples may be evidence that Japan, led by hawkish military chief of staff Masao Takahashi, has been secretly developing next-generation weapon systems in preparation for a conflict with China. If the Covert-One team can't prevent General Takahashi from provoking a war, the entire world will be dragged into a battle certain to kill tens of millions of people and leave much of planet uninhabitable for centuries.

Great book, but I wish there was more Marty Zellerbach in it, and included Peter Howell...

I enjoyed the story, but I found the air raider to be exceptional. Great voice actor, made the story come alive.

Great story enhanced by narrator

If you like the Covert-One series and its characters, you'll enjoy listening to The Patriot Attack. Kyle Mills did an excellent job of spinning up a fast-paced story centered around a wealthy Japanese military powerbroker's attempt to position Japan as the world superpower. This is a refreshing change of villains from the usual group of Islamic extremists.

Least anybody be offended by casting a Japanese as the villain, the Patriot Attack is more about one very powerful man's quest rather than that of a nation or religious interpretation.

Broadly speaking, the story centers on the possibility of Japan overcoming its old rival China while subordinating the United States. A reader or listener has to suspend believability from time to time - but the characters are fun and the story is action-packed.

Finally, I thought Jeff Woodman's performance added to the experience by artfully representing a broad range of characters of varying age, gender and nationality.

On a more serious side, the story also points out how fighting the last war and spending a vast amount of money on the improvement of traditional weaponry might not be enough to maintain our status quo as the world superpower.

This book isn't for everybody – but if you're a Covert-One fan, it's certainly for you.

A Refreshing Change of Adversaries

but won’t be my last! I’m already a fan of the author from his other works, and like his others this was really good! The narrator did a great job as did the others involved in this production. I look forward to the next one!

My first of the series

Great story. A can't stop listening audible. Kyle Mills pits the Japanese against the Chinese in this techno-thriller.

Great but NOT Jason Bourne.

Non-stop action, sci-fi elements, geopolitical twists, truly entertaining. Can't wait for the movie. It's going to be awesome!

Awesome

Much better than the previous book. Goo premise, but taken too far. However, well written, less "superman-y", and no boring parts. Worth the listen.

Unbelievable but fun!
