About this listen

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

They didn't expect actual mermaids. They certainly didn't expect those mermaids to have teeth.

This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench...and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.

Great story!

I loved the storyline for this book. It brought those old sailors tales of mermaids luring men to their deaths, to life, and gave a good modern spin to it. It was actually pretty creepy, and I don’t get creeped out easily. I like the narrator as well. She had a nice cool storytelling voice and a clear, calm way of speaking that made the story gel nicely. I really liked the mermaid voices. They were eerie and lilting, just the way you imagine it would be. In your nightmares!!

Short and sweet

Not particularly deep, but a fun fast paced suspense in a genre not overly exploited.

Mermaid Horror

Loved this short horror story. I immediately purchased the next book as soon as this one was finished. Even knowing everyone dies before you start the book, it still kept my interest until the end.

Pure fun

If you like Mira Grant then you'll like this. it has a similar feel to the newsflesh series. It's a little taste before the full length book/sequel.

Prequel/Sequel - The tale behind the story

Definitely listen to main story first to avoid spoilers. Both are highly enjoyable and I wish there was more to the story.

I loved this book

It had just enough detail to make it interesting, and left just enough mystery to keep it spooky and interesting. A lot of authors will spell things out for their readers but the best will give just enough that your own mind will fill in the details to make it even greater.

Even the short documentary style of the novel really aids in how the story is told. The reader is able to jump back and forth between cold hard details and actual events as the "documentary" references clips recovered after the fact.

In the end, I would recommend this story to anyone who loves a good short somewhat scary story, and to people who like a dash of ocean horror with their stories. Also, and it feels a bit weird to say it, but fans of the found footage genre of movies might enjoy this story as well!

Worth it even though it’s short!

I don’t really take time to review books since I burn through them but I absolutely love this short read began at work the last little bit of my shift and I stayed up just to finish it! I do wish the ending told us more but she did leave room for a next one! About to check out if there is a second one! Great buy for I think $3 thanks to a sale!
