Publisher's summary

Modern medicine has conquered or contained many of the diseases that used to carry children away before their time, reducing mortality and improving health. Vaccination and treatment are widely available, not held in reserve for the chosen few. There are still monsters left to fight, but the old ones, the simple ones, trouble us no more.

Or so we thought. For with the reduction in danger comes the erosion of memory, as pandemics fade from memory into story into fairy tale. Those old diseases can't have been so bad, people say, or we wouldn't be here to talk about them. They don't matter. They're never coming back.

It begins with a fever. By the time the spots appear, it's too late: Morris's disease is loose on the world, and the bodies of the dead begin to pile high in the streets. When its terrible side consequences for the survivors become clear, something must be done, or the dying will never stop. For Dr. Isabella Gauley, whose niece was the first confirmed victim, the route forward is neither clear nor strictly ethical, but it may be the only way to save a world already in crisis. It may be the only way to atone for her part in everything that's happened. She will never be forgiven, not by herself, and not by anyone else. But she can, perhaps, do the right thing.

please tell me there will be a sequel!

It was a good story. It was really getting good at the end. I hope this isn't the only book.

I want more!

The only negative I have for this book is that I didn't want it to end. The premise is feasible so it's terrifying! This author never fails me. Her writing is believable and utterly entrancing!

political blustering too difficult to disregard

Almost to difficult…. I’m halfway through, but it’s getting painful. This could’ve been a superb story without all the moments of soapbox political rants. I know these are all left wing talking points and I’m on the left but when did the left gets so fashy? I’ve never skipped a Mira Grant or Seanan McGuire book so I’m gonna power through this one.💪🏻

great short listen

very good story. leaves you with just enough small questions to make you wonder throughout the story without sending up red flags to giving away the ending.

Holy Sh*t

This book is pretty short but will knock you out. I swear Mira Grant gets better at the mind f**ck in every book she writes. 10 out of 10 highly recommend if you like epidemiology horror. Do not read before bed.

Very relevant

This hit very close to the world events, and there are a lot of points that should listened to.

I enjoyed the performance, and the story.

Stark, timely, chilling

I very much wanted more of this story. What a chilling, fantastic look at something so close to home.

No way

I have loved all the books written under Mira Grant. So as soon as a new one came out under that name I bought it. This one sucks and I returned it

Not my cup of tea, not bad but not my style.

I am strongly pro-vax, but even I became frustrated and bored with this book. most of it was one long lecture about the dangers of antivax people ( which I do agree with), but there was huge parts of the story missing or big jumps in the time line with no reasoning as to how or why things happened. I prefer to read/hear about the action as it happens, I dislike it when the author just tells us about what happened afterward.
