About this listen

In the village of Liver-and-Onions, there was a Potato Face Blind Man who used to play an accordion on the corner near the post office. The sometime narrator of these tales, he transports readers and listeners to Rootabaga Country, where the railroad tracks go from straight to zigzag, the pigs wear bibs, and the Village of Cream Puffs floats in the wind, looking like a little hat that you could wear on the end of your thumb.

Carl Sandburg, the beloved folk chronicler and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, invented these stories for his own daughters. Populated by corn fairies, circus performers, and such memorable characters as Poker Face the Baboon, Hot Dog the Tiger, and Gimme the Ax, Rootabaga Country is built with the homespun poetry of the American frontier. The stories’ inspired nonsense - loaded with rhythm, humor, and tongue-twisting names - fires the imagination and pulls at the heartstrings.

Great children's storybook

This is a great storybook for youngsters. The stories are imaginative, well written and well narrated. Our grandchildren love the stories and the book is written so that it is in easy to pause for bedtime reading, to be continued at their next bedtime.
The narrator is a fine choice to keep the children involved. Her voice is clear and easy to understand and she adds great "color" to the tales.
This book is a perfect choice to add to your child's library. I think they will want to listen to it time and again.

Tickles the Imagination

And if you’re listening carefully, will your funny bone as well.

I love Carl Sandburg’s invented language and can almost feel the twinkle in his eye when listening. Zura Johnson’s reading of these stories is clear and helpful. Her voice, and phrasing bring sense to these nonsensical stories so they can be enjoyed to their fullest. If you have your children, or grandchildren listen to them, - you might provide then with paper and paint. Or in the evening- one chapter at bedtime- could serve as a dessert for their day. As an educator, mother and grandmother, I’d say these readings are superb. Linda Young
