About this listen

In this volume of The Flashman Papers, Flashman, the arch-cad and toady, matches his wits, his talents for deceit and malice, and above all his speed in evasion against the most brilliant European statesman and against the most beauiful and unscrupulous adventuress of the era. From London gaming-halls and English hunting-fields to European dungeons and throne-rooms, he is involved in a desperate succession of escapes, disguises, amours and (when he cannot avoid them) hand-to-hand combats. All the while, the destiny of a continent rests on his broad and failing shoulders.

Classic Flashman

Once again another brilliant tale of our anti-hero Flashy. The story is terrific and performed beautifully by Mr. Case. If you like Flashman you'll blast through this hilarious read.

Flashman in Germany

Flashman finds himself woven into a scheme of political angling, while he looks out for himself. Superbly read by David Case.

Excellent

A rousing romp all around. The narrator was excellent and the fiction historically accurate for the times. I enjoyed this volume of the Flashman series even more than the first in the series.

Humor, adventure, history..

The fictional memoir of a British officer who is, he openly admits, a poltroon. Some of his language is offensive, so listen with headphones. Engaging tale. Terrific narration.

Part of the Continuing Story

More of the same from Flashman. Interesting situations and enjoyable writing but disgusting individual. I will continue with the next book in the series.

Prisoner of Zenda send up

David Case was born to be Flashman, he reads these books with such nuance, panache and superb comic timing. Satire, adventure, swashbuckle, history, the Flashman books are a composite of all these things, based on the conceit that the bully, coward and womanizer, Flashman, (the despicable character from Tom Brown's School Days), became a career soldier and subsequent hero, many times over, as revealed in the Flashman papers. There are no other books quite like these. Highly recommended to everyone who loves classic English novels and black humor.

The Scoundral Continues to Intrigue

In his own words, Harry Flashman is a "poltroon." So when he gets enmeshed in a desperate (yet oddly familiar) plot, watching him twist and turn is a joy. The book is well written, interesting, and clips along. The narrator does a great job. Just an enjoyable historical novel that is well worth listening to.

Totally fun

I had purchased several other of the "Flashman" novels quite some time ago and had almost forgotten what an amusing and fun listen they were. I was delighted to find this one and it certainly did not disappoint. David Case simply has to be the best narrator I have ever had the pleasure of listening to... Brilliant!!

Fantastic narration

At first I thought the narrator’s pompous accent would ruin the book, but just the opposite. I think the book was written to be performed exactly by David Case. The book itself is quite funny, but his pompous accent is absolutely perfect, and he provides the novel with a Flashman that is true in both spirit and form. I enjoyed this one more than the first book, I think because of the narrator; whereas, I read the first one physically. Definitely recommended.

This is the one the movie was based on

The full Royal Flash (1975) movie starring Malcolm McDowell as Flashman and Oliver Reed as Bismarck can be found on YouTube but make sure you first listen to this magnificent audiobook. Flashman at his best!
