When Josie Jensen, an awkward 13-year-old musical prodigy, crashes headlong into newcomer Samuel Yazzie, an 18-year-old Navajo boy full of anger and confusion, an unlikely friendship blooms. Josie teaches Samuel about words, music, and friendship, and along the way finds a kindred spirit. Upon graduation, Samuel abandons the sleepy, small town in search of a future and a life, leaving his young mentor behind.
Many years go by and Samuel returns, finding his old friend in need of the very things she offered him years before. Their roles reversed, Samuel teaches Josie about life, love, and letting go. Deeply romantic and poignant, Running Barefoot is the story of a small-town girl and a Native American boy, the ties that bind them to their homes and families, and the love that gives them wings.

1) I adore every work of Amy Harmon's that Ive ever read, this one no exception.
2) I am in no way religious, and even less Christian.
Number 2 above is why Amy Harmon is such a skilled writer. I could love and appreciate the religious symbolism without feeling compelled to believe it. She spoke of Indigenous beliefs with the same fervent passion as she did the traditional Christian parables without discounting either as false. She breathed life into her characters and grew them as people using the woven words of God and a Native's reverence for our Earth.
She took a delicate topic of ill timed love and let it blossom without harming the reader's perception of her Samuel.
This book will live in my top 5 most enjoyed reads of all time for many years to come.
I'd give an entire limb for a fraction of her talent in bringing these stories together.
I don't care who you are, devout Heathen, wiccan, Satanist, Navajo, Christian, Hindu or Buddhist. You'll still thoroughly love reading this story.
Truly exceptional, moving, engaging, & respectful
